هَلdid? سَرَّpleased أَولادَsons of اللَقيطَةِthe foundling woman أَنَّناthat we
سِلمٌat peace غَداةَon the morning of فَوارِسِthe horsemen of المِقدادِal-Miqdād
Did it please the foundling woman's sons that we
Did the sons of Al-Liqa'a rejoice
were at peace on the morning of al-Miqdād's horsemen?
When we were, at dawn, lances for Al-Miqdad?
كُنّاwe were ثَمانِيَةًeight وَكانواand they were جَحفَلاًa great host
لَجِباًclamorous فَشُلّواso they were driven off بِالرِماحِby spears بَدادِin all directions
We were eight, while they were a great host,
We were eight while they were a horde
clamorous; yet spears drove them off in all directions.
Rough, who failed with spears of misfortune.
لَوْلاbut for الّذيwhat لاقَتthey suffered وَمَسand touched نُسورَهاtheir hoof-frogs
بِجَنوبِsouth of سايَةَSāya أَمسِyesterday بِالتَقوادِthrough being led
But for what they had suffered, which also hurt their hoof-frogs
Were it not for Him whom her eagles met
south of Sāya yesterday through being led—
At the south of Sayya yesterday feeding,
أَفنىwore away دَوابِرَهاtheir hoof-heels وَلاحَand wasted مُتونَهاtheir backs
يَومٌa day تُقادُthey are led بِهِduring it وَيَومُand a day of طِرادِpursuit
their heels were worn down and their backs wasted
Who destroyed their battalions and glistened their backs
by a day of being led and a day of pursuit—
A day when they are driven and a day pursued,
لَلَقينَكُمthey would surely have met you يَحمِلنَthey bear كُلَّevery مُدَجَّجٍfully armed warrior
حاميguardian of الحَقيقَةِhonor ماجِدِnoble in الأَجدادِforefathers
they would surely have met you, bearing every fully armed warrior,
You would have met us carrying every armed man
a guardian of honor, noble in ancestry.
Protector of the truth, glorious like forefathers.
كُنّاwe were مِنَamong الرَسَلِthe unhurried men الَّذينَwho يَلونَكُمfollow close behind you
إِذwhen تَقذِفونَyou cast loose عِنانَthe reins of كُلِّevery جَوادِsteed
We were among the unhurried men close behind you,
We were the messengers who preceded you
when you cast loose the reins of every steed.
When you unleashed the reins of every steed.
كَلّاno indeed وَرَبِّand by the Lord of الراقِصاتِthe dancing she-camels إِلىto مِنىًMinā
وَالجائِبينَand those traversing مَخارِمَthe passes of الأَطوادِthe towering mountains
No! By the Lord of the dancing she-camels going to Minā,
No, by the Lord of those swaying to Minna
and of those crossing the passes of towering mountains,
And the bringers of sacrifices on litter,
حَتّىuntil نُبيلَwe cause to urinate الخَيلَthe horses فيin عَرَصاتِكُمyour courtyards
وَنَؤوبَand we return بِالمَلِكاتِwith the wives وَالأَولادِand the children
until we make the horses urinate in your courtyards,
Until we train horses in your horse-pastures
and return with the wives and children,
And return with the queens and children,
زَهواًproudly بِكُلِّon every مُقَلِّصٍlong-legged steed وَطِمِرَّةٍand fleet mare
فيin كُلِّevery مُعتَرَكٍbattlefield عَطَفنَthey wheeled وَوادِand valley
proudly, on every long-legged steed and fleet mare
Boasting of every coward and sly one
that wheeled in every battlefield and valley.
In every battlefield we turned and valley,
فَكَذاكَso it is إِنَّindeed جِيادَناour steeds مَلبونَةٌmilk-fed
وَالحَربُand war مُشعَلَةٌset ablaze بِريحِby the wind of غَوادِdawn-going steeds
So it is: our steeds are indeed milk-fed,
So our steeds are high-spirited
and war is kindled by the wind of dawn-going steeds.
And war is kindled with the winds of misfortune,
وَسُيوفُناand our swords بيضُwhite الحَدائِدِthe iron blades تَجتَليstrip away
جُنَنَshields الحَديدِiron وَهامَةَand the skull of المُرتادِthe raider
And our swords, white-bladed, strip away
Our white-bladed swords flash
iron shields and the raider's skull.
The madness of iron and resolve of the frequenter of the battlefields.
أَخَذَhemmed in الإِلَهُGod عَلَيهِمُupon them لِحَرامِهِfor His sacred bounds
وَلِعِزَّةِand for the might of الرَحمَنِthe Merciful بِالأَسدادِwith barriers
God hemmed them in for His sacred bounds,
God took a vow against them for violating His taboo
and for the Merciful's might, with barriers.
And the Honour of the Merciful with contracts.
كانواthey were بِدارٍin a home ناعِمينَliving at ease فَبُدِّلواso they were given instead

أَيّامَin the days of ذيDhū قَرَدٍQarad وُجوهَthe faces of عِبادِslaves
They lived at ease in their home, but were given instead,
They were living comfortably in a house but were changed
in the days of Dhū Qarad, the faces of slaves.
To faces of monkeys and servants of Jurud.
