أَلا أَبلِغ أَبا هِدمٍ رَسولاً

أَلا أَبلِغ أَبا هِدمٍ رَسولاً

مُغَلغَلَةً تَخُبُّ بِها المَطِيُّ

مُغَلغَلَةً تَخُبُّ بِها المَطِيُّ

Come, convey a message to Abu Hidm,

Shall I not send to Abū Hidām a messenger

borne far afield by trotting camels.

With fetters that gall the riding beast?

أَكُنتُ وَلِيَّكُم في كُلِّ كُرهٍ

أَكُنتُ وَلِيَّكُم في كُلِّ كُرهٍ

وَغَيري في الرَخاءِ هُوَ الوَلِيُّ

وَغَيري في الرَخاءِ هُوَ الوَلِيُّ

Was I your ally in every hardship,

I was a true friend when you met misfortune,

while in prosperity another is the ally?

Though in prosperity another was more beloved.

وَمِنكُم شاهِدٌ وَلَقَد رَآني

وَمِنكُم شاهِدٌ وَلَقَد رَآني

رُفِعتُ لَهُ كَما اِحتُمِلَ الصَبِيُّ

رُفِعتُ لَهُ كَما اِحتُمِلَ الصَبِيُّ

And among you is a witness; indeed, he saw me

And one of you has witnessed me—oft has he seen

lifted up to him, as a child is carried.

Me rapt aloft like a child in leading strings.
