حَصانٌa chaste woman رَزانٌdignified ماnot تُزَنُّshe is suspected بِرَيبَةٍof wrongdoing
وَتُصبِحُand she wakes غَرثىhungry مِنfrom لُحومِthe flesh of الغَوافِلِthe unsuspecting women
Chaste and dignified, she is suspected of no wrongdoing,
A graceful steed does not fret with suspicion
and wakes hungry, having eaten none of the flesh of unsuspecting women.
And becomes ragged from the flesh of parasites
فَإِنfor if كُنتُI was أَهجوكُمI lampoon you كَماas قَدindeed زَعَمتُمُyou have claimed
فَلاthen may not رَفَعَتraise سَوطيmy whip إِلَيَّto me أَنامِليmy fingertips
For if I have lampooned you, as you have claimed,
If I satirize you as you have claimed
then may my fingertips never raise my whip to me.
Then my fingers did not raise my whip against me
فَإِنَّfor indeed الَّذيwhat قَدalready قيلَwas said لَيسَis not بِلائِطٍclinging
بِكَto you الدَهرُat any time بَلrather سَعيُthe scheming of اِمرِئٍa man بِكَagainst you ماحِلِwho slanders
For what has been said will not cling
For what has been said is not idle
to you at any time; rather, it is a slanderer's scheming against you.
Blame the times, not a man's endeavor
وَكَيفَand how وَوُدّيwhile my love ماas long as حَيِيتُI live وَنُصرَتيand my support
لِآلِfor the family of نَبِيِّthe Prophet of اللَهِGod زَينِthe adornment of المَحافِلِgatherings
And how could I, when my love, as long as I live, and my support
And how could my love live and my support
are for the family of God's Prophet, the adornment of gatherings?
Be for the Prophet's family, adornment of gatherings
بِأَنَّbecause لَهُمtheirs is فَضلاًexcellence تَرىyou see الناسَthe people خُضَّعاًbowing in submission
لَهُbefore it بَينَbetween غارٍone sunk low دونَهُbelow it مُتَطالِلِone straining upward
For they possess such excellence that you see people bowing
For they have virtue which subdues people
before it—some sunk below it, others straining upward.
To it in a cave beneath which they take shelter
