A report of Umayy's words has reached me,

And he shows no loyalty in another's absence.

He built for baseness, so his hands fell short

Of lofty glory amid verbal sparring.

If I live, I shall spread words for him,

To be carried from Ukaz through the gatherings:

Rhymes like stones, when they hurtle onward

    Toward the deaf, overbearing, coarse.

I built sturdy verses for them,

    Like a load's binding, cinched with a packing-toggle.

They visit you wherever you spend the winter,

And batter you in your dwelling in summertime.

You will learn, if you run a wagered race,

On horseback, whom you lampooned and whom you challenge.

When we come riding sleek thoroughbreds,

With brown spears bearing thick points at their tips,

And march with the army, stirring up dust,

Then you flee from verbal abuse into deadly places.

And if you speak, you speak without sense,

And he was certain of disgrace and verbal abuse—

Shrouded, wrapping your heads in disgrace,

    Kindled, blazing like smokeless flame,

Like a lion's lunge as he guards a lair,

Strong at the roots of his ribs, thick-fleshed.

You lower your gaze lest I meet you face to face,

And shoot sidelong glances when I turn my back.
