ذَهَبَتcarried away بِاِبنِwith Ibn الزَبَعرىal-Ziba‘ra وَقعَةٌa battle
كانَwas مِنّاon our side الفَضلُthe advantage فيهاin it لَوif عَدَلhe judged fairly
A battle swept Ibn al-Ziba‘ra away;
There was a battle against the son of Zabban
ours was the advantage in it, if he judged fairly.
We would have prevailed justly if fate was equal
وَلَقَدand indeed نِلتُمyou dealt blows وَنِلناand we dealt blows مِنكُمُat your expense
وَكَذاكَand likewise الحَربُwar أَحياناًat times دُوَلalternating fortunes
You have dealt blows, and we have dealt blows to you;
And indeed you struck us and we struck you
so war's fortunes sometimes alternate.
For thus is war, it changes and alternates
إِذwhen شَدَدناwe charged شَدَّةًa charge صادِقَةًresolute
فاجَأناكُمُwe surprised you إِلىto سَفحِthe foot of الجَبَلthe mountain
When we charged in a resolute onslaught,
When we were fiercely resolute
we took you by surprise, driving you to the mountain's foot,
We took you by surprise to the mountain slope
إِذas تُوَلّونَyou turn away عَلىupon أَعقابِكُمyour heels
هَرَباًfleeing فيin الشَعبِthe ravine أَشباهَlike الرَسَلherds
as you turned upon your heels,
As you retreated backwards
fleeing through the ravine like herds.
Fleeing through the ravines like fleeing messengers
نَضَعُwe plant الخَطِّيَّKhatti spears فيin أَكتافِكُمyour shoulders
حَيثُwherever نَهوىwe wish عَلَلاًa second draught بَعدَafter نَهَلa first draught
We planted Khatti spears in your shoulders,
We planted our swords in your shoulders
wherever we wished, a second draught after the first.
Wherever we thrust them after unsheathing
فَسَدَحناso we laid low فيin مَقامٍa place واحِدٍone
مِنكُمُof you سَبعينَseventy غَيرَwithout المُنتَحَلa fabricated claim
So we laid low in a single place
We felled seventy of you in one place
seventy of you—no invented boast.
Besides those who escaped by guile
وَأَسَرناand we captured مِنكُمُof you أَعدادَهُمtheir number
فَاِنصَرَفتُمso you withdrew مِثلَlike إِفلاتِthe escape of الحَجَلpartridges
And we captured an equal number of you;
And we captured your multitudes
then you withdrew like escaping partridges,
So you left like collapsing structures
بِخَناطيلَin scattered bands كَجِنّانِlike serpents of المَلاthe open plain
مَنwhoever يُلاقوهُthey encounter him مِنَamong الناسِpeople يُهَلis terrified
in scattered bands like serpents of the plain;
With the gait of possessed jinn
whoever they encounter is terrified.
Whoever sees them panics and shrieks
يَخرُجُcomes out الأَكدَرُdark filth مِنfrom أَستاهِكُمyour arses
مِثلَlike ذَرقِthe droppings of النيبِold she-camels يَأكُلنَthey eat العَصَلthe ‘aṣal plant
Dark filth comes out of your arses,
The most cowardly of you fled
like old she-camels' droppings as they eat ‘aṣal.
Like young gazelles eating thorns
لَمdid not يَفوتوناoutstrip us بِشَيءٍin anything ساعَةًfor a moment
غَيرَexcept أَنthat وَلَّواthey turned away بِجُهدٍwith strain وَفَشَلand cowardice
They gained no advantage over us, even for a moment,
They did not elude us for an instant
except that they fled with strain and cowardice.
Except they fled with exhaustion and failure
ضاقَwas too narrow عَنّاfor us الشِعبُthe ravine إِذas نَجزَعُهُwe cross it
وَمَلَأناand we filled الفُرطَthe heights مِنهُمwith them وَالرِجَلand the watercourses
The ravine was too narrow for us as we crossed it,
The ravines were too narrow for us as we pursued them
and we filled the heights and watercourses with them,
And we filled them, their valleys and hills,
بِرِجالٍthrough men لَستُمُyou are not أَمثالَهُمtheir equals
أُيِّدواthey were aided جِبريلَGabriel نَصراًas help فَنَزَلso he descended
through men whose equals you are not.
With men you are not the likes of
They were aided by Gabriel, who descended to help.
Who would aid Gabriel if he sought victory from above
وَعَلَوناand we prevailed يَومَon the day of بَدرٍBadr بِالتُقىthrough piety
طاعَةَobedience to اللَهِGod وَتَصديقَand belief in الرُسُلthe messengers
And we prevailed on the day of Badr through piety,
And we prevailed at Badr through piety
in obedience to God and belief in the messengers.
Obeying Allah and believing in the messengers
وَتَرَكناand we left فيin قُرَيشٍQuraysh عَورَةًa shameful breach
يَومَon the day of بَدرٍBadr وَأَحاديثَand tales مَثَلa byword
And we left a shameful breach in Quraysh
And we left an exposed scar in Quraysh
on the day of Badr, and tales that became bywords.
The day of Badr, and events to narrate as examples
وَرَسولُand the Messenger of اللَهِGod حَقّاًtruly شاهِدٌa witness
يَومَon the day of بَدرٍBadr وَالتَنابيلُand the squat men الهُبَلthe hulking ones
And God's Messenger was truly a witness
And the Messenger of Allah is truly a witness
on the day of Badr, and so were the squat, hulking men.
To Badr, and the clear signals
وَتَرَكناand we left مِنof قُرَيشٍQuraysh جَمعَهُمtheir host
مِثلَlike ماthat which جُمِّعَwas gathered فيin الخِصبِlush pasture الهَمَلuntended camels
And we left the assembled host of Quraysh
And we left Quraysh, all of them gathered
like untended camels gathered in lush pasture.
Like insects gathered on rotten meat
وَقَتَلناand we killed مِنكُمُamong you أَهلَthe bearers of اللِوَاthe banner
إِذwhen لَقيناكُمwe met you كَأَنّاas though we were أُسدُlions طَلّdew
And we killed the banner-bearers among you,
And we killed your chieftains
when we met you as though we were lions wet with dew.
When we met you all like attacking lions
فَقَتَلناso we killed كُلَّevery رَأسٍleader مِنهُمُamong them
وَقَتَلناand we killed كُلَّevery جَحجاحٍmighty chief رِفَلّswaggering
So we killed every leader among them,
We killed every leader among them
and we killed every mighty, swaggering chief.
And every puffed up vain one
كَمhow many قَتَلناwe killed مِنof كَريمٍa nobleman سَيِّدٍa lord
ماجِدِnoble through الجَدَّينِboth grandfathers مِقدامٍbold بَطَلa hero
How many a noble lord we killed,
How many noble lords did we kill
noble through both grandfathers, a bold hero,
Gallant, from a line of gallantry, valiant in war
وَشَريفٍand a nobleman لِشَريفٍof a nobleman ماجِدٍillustrious
لاnot نُباليهِwe heed him لَدىat وَقعِthe impact of الأَسَلthe spears
and a noble born of an illustrious noble,
And noble chiefs from a line of glorious chiefs
whom we disregarded when the spears struck,
We do not care who they were when swords clash
حينَwhen أَعلَنتُمyou cried aloud بِصَوتٍwith a cry كاذِبٍlying
وَأَبوand Abu سُفيانَSufyan كَيso that يَعلوmight be exalted هُبَلHubal
when you shouted out a lying cry,
When you falsely proclaimed in a deceitful voice
and Abu Sufyan too, so that Hubal might be exalted.
And Abu Sufyan, how lofty his delusions were
نَحنُwe لاnot أَنتُمyou بَنيsons of أَستاهِهاher arses
نَحنُwe فيin البَأسِthe fray إِذاwhen البَأسُbattle نَزَلdescends
We—not you, sons of her arses—
"We, not you, are the sons of Asthah!"
we are in the fray when battle descends.
We are the ones in war when war descends
