طالَ ليلي وناوأتْني الشُّجونُ

طالَ ليلي وناوأتْني الشُّجونُ

ودعاني للسُّهد قلبٌ حزينُ

My night grew long, and sorrows assailed me.

My long night has wearied me with sorrows

And a sorrowful heart called me to sleeplessness.

And my grieving heart calls me to pass the night in wakefulness

وجرتْ عَبرةٌ من العين وهنًا

وجرتْ عَبرةٌ من العين وهنًا

فدعاها بين السكون أنينُ

فدعاها بين السكون أنينُ

And a tear flowed from the eye late at night.

A tear flows from my eye in weakness

Then a moan summoned it amid the stillness.

And my sighing disturbs the stillness

وتولَّى من التغيُّظ صبري

وتولَّى من التغيُّظ صبري

مثلما ولَّى منذُ أمسِ القطينُ

مثلما ولَّى منذُ أمسِ القطينُ

And my patience fled because of fury.

My patience deserts me in my anger

Just as the dwellers departed yesterday.

As the rain deserted us yesterday evening
