وأنتَand You الإلهُGod الواحدُthe One المُتَفَضِّلُthe gracious Bestower
Exalted are You, Lord of mankind; You are the One in whom hope is placed.
O Lord of mankind, to You we come, You are the hoped for.
And You are God, the One, the gracious Bestower.
You are the One God, the Beneficent.
وقفناwe stood بأبوابِat the gates of الرَّجاءِhope وماand not لناfor us
سِواكَother than You عَلَىthroughout الأيَّامِthe days مَلْجَاa refuge وموئلُand a shelter
We stood at the gates of hope, and we have no
We stand at the gates of hope, and we have none but You,
Refuge or shelter throughout the days but You.
As our refuge and destination through all our days.
وفيand in كلِّevery شيءٍthing حولناaround us منكَfrom You آيةٌa sign

And in everything around us there is a sign from You,
In everything around us are signs from You,
Glorifying in God's name or devoting itself to worship.
That glorify God’s name, or seek forgiveness.
لقدindeed كانthere were فيin السَّبعِthe seven heavens الطِّباقِlayered one above another بصائرٌclear signs
وفيand in الطَّيرِthe birds أدناهاthe nearest of them لِمَنْfor whoever كانwas يعقلُreasoning
Indeed, in the seven layered heavens there were clear signs,
The seven heavens had insights,
And in birds are the nearest of them, for whoever reasons.
And so did the lowest of birds, for those who reason.
وفيand in الأرَضِينَthe earths الحاملاتِbearing ثقالَهاtheir heavy burdens
وفيand in الشَّامخاتِthe towering mountains الصُّمِّthe solid ones تعلوrise وتَسفلُand descend
And in the earths bearing their heavy burdens,
The earths that carry their weight,
And in the towering, solid mountains, rising and descending,
And the towering mountains, silent, rising and falling.
وفيand in الجارياتِthe sailing الفُلكِships بينamid حَبابِهاits waves

And in the ships sailing amid its waves,
And the ships flowing through the sea between its waves,
They head with them toward a shore; yet, if You will, You withhold aid.
You command them as You will, You lead them or let them drift.
وفيand in وَدَقِthe droplets of الغيثِthe rain اشرأبَّstretched upward لِوَقْعِهِat its fall
مَواتُthe lifeless portion of الثَّرىthe soil فارتدَّthen turned back بالغيثِwith the rain ينهلُdrinks deeply
And in the downpour's drops, at whose fall stretched upward
At the gentle striking of rain, the ground soaks up its falling,
The lifeless soil, then turned to drink deeply of the rain.
Then gives back the rain in streams that flow.
فلبَّيْكَso, at Your service ربَّLord of النَّاسِmankind ماnot ليَfor me دُونَهapart from Him
وليٌّa protector ولاand not يومًاon any day سوىbesides اللهِGod أسألُI ask
So, at Your service, Lord of mankind! Apart from Him I have no
So to You, Lord of mankind, I have none but You,
Protector, nor do I ever ask anyone but God.
Never did I have besides God a guardian or protector.
دعوتُكI called upon You فيin جنحِthe cover of الظَّلامِthe darkness فضاءَthen shone ليfor me

I called upon You under cover of darkness, and there shone for me
I called You in the darkness of night, and in Your forgiveness
Through Your pardon a light, beneath which the sun advances.
Came light, beside which the sun seems dim.
إذاwhen النَّفسthe soul قادتنيled me إلىto سُوءِthe evil of صُنْعِهاits deeds
وأذعَنَand yielded منهاfrom within it واجسٌan inner thought متأمِّلُreflective
When the soul led me toward the evil of its deeds,
When desire leads me to evil deeds,
And a reflective inner thought within it yielded,
And I heed its call, contemplating.
ذعرتُI startled فؤاديmy heart فاستجارَso it sought refuge بِلُطْفِهِin His kindness
فجادَso He bestowed generously بنُعْمىwith a blessing ماnot لهاfor it بعدُthereafter مُبْطِلُone who annuls
I startled my heart, and it sought refuge in His kindness.
My heart trembles, so it seeks refuge in His kindness,
So He generously bestowed a blessing that none can thereafter annul.
Which then pours down favor that nothing erases thereafter.
دعوناwe called فأعطيتَso You gave الجزيلَthe abundant gift ولمand did not نَزَلْcease
نقارفُwe commit ذنبًاa sin أوor نتوبُwe repent فتَقبلُand so You accept
We called, and You gave abundantly, while we still
We call and You give abundantly, though we persist
Commit sin, or repent—and You accept.
In sin, then repent and You accept us back.
نَعائمُblessings لاnot تُحصَىcan be counted منfrom اللهِGod كثرةًin abundance
وأعظمُهاand the greatest of them الإيمانُfaith باللهِin God أوَّلُforemost
Blessings from God, too abundant to be counted,
Uncountable blessings from God, the greatest of which
And foremost and greatest among them is faith in God.
Is faith in God, from the very start.
وسنَّand He ordained لناfor us شرعًاa law قويمًاsound عمادُهُits foundation
بهthrough it نَهتديwe find guidance للحقِّto the truth والأمرُand the matter مُعْضِلُis perplexing
And He ordained for us a law with a sound foundation,
He legislated for us an upright religion, founded on
Through it we find guidance to truth when the matter is perplexing.
Guidance to the truth, even as matters grow complex.
وخطَّand He prescribed لناfor us الشُّورىconsultation عمادَthe pillar of أمورِناour affairs
وقدand indeed سنَّهاhe instituted it هذاthis النَّبيُّProphet المفضَّلُthe favored
And He prescribed consultation for us as the pillar of our affairs,
And He ordained consultation as the basis of our affairs,
And this favored Prophet indeed instituted it.
As legislated by this honored Prophet.
وقدand indeed أنزلَHe sent down الفرقانَthe Criterion يَفْصِلُto judge بينَناbetween us
بعدلٍwith justice تقصَّاهfully expounded it الكتابُthe Book المرتَّلُrecited in measured tones
And He indeed sent down the Criterion to judge between us,
He sent down the Criterion, to decide between us
With justice fully expounded by the Book recited in measured tones.
With justice, seeking judgment through the Oft-repeated Scripture.
فأمَّاso as for مَنِwhoever اختارَchose الهُدَىguidance وسبيلَهand its path
فإنَّthen indeed جزاءَthe reward of اللهِGod أوفَىmore complete وأفضلُand better
So as for whoever chooses guidance and its path,
As for one who chooses guidance and its way,
God's reward is indeed more complete and better.
God’s reward is more fulfilling and superior.
وأمَّاand as for مَنِwhoever اختارَchose الضَّلالةَmisguidance والهوىand desire
فميزانُthen the balance of ربِّيmy Lord فوقَabove ذلكthat أعدَلُmore just
And as for whoever chooses misguidance and desire,
But one who chooses misguidance and desire,
Then my Lord's balance is, beyond that, more just.
Will face my Lord’s scales, even more just.
أمَنْis one who كانwas يَهدِيguiding للهدَىto guidance وسبيلِهand its path
كَمَنْlike one who هوhe فيin بحرِthe sea of الضَّلالةِmisguidance يَنهلُdrinks deeply
Is one who guides to guidance and its path
Can one who guides to the guidance and its way
Like one who drinks deeply from the sea of misguidance?
Be like one drowned in seas of misguidance?
فماso not يستويare equal الأمرانِthe two courses، هذاthis مِنَfrom التُّقَىpiety
وهذاand this مِنَfrom الشَّيطانِSatan لوif كنتَyou were تعقلُto reason
So the two courses are not equal: this comes from piety,
The two are not equal. One leads to piety,
And that comes from Satan, if you were to reason.
The other to Satan, if you reason.
تَبَيَّنَbecame clear للطَّاغينَto the transgressors كيفhow مآلُهمtheir end
وربُّكَand your Lord يَهديguides منwhomever يشاءُHe wills ويُضْلِلُand leads astray
It has become clear to the transgressors what their end will be,
The end for the tyrants was made clear,
And your Lord guides whom He wills, and leads astray.
While your Lord guides whom He wills, and leaves astray whom He wills.
ومنand whoever يَعْشُturns blindly away عنfrom ذكرِremembrance of الإلهِGod يكنْthere will be لهfor him
قرينٌa companion منfrom الشَّيطانِSatan يَنهَىforbids ويَفعلُand acts
And whoever turns a blind eye to remembrance of God will have
One who lives heedless of God,
A companion from Satan who forbids and acts.
Will have a devilish companion, enticing and misguiding.
فسبِّحْso glorify بحمدِwith praise of اللهِGod لاdo not تكُbe غافلًاheedless
فقدfor indeed خابَhas failed حقًّاtruly مَنْwhoever عَنِof الحمدِpraise يغفلُis heedless
So glorify God with praise; do not be heedless.
So glorify God with praise, do not be unmindful,
For truly, whoever neglects praise has failed.
Indeed one who neglects praise is failed.
ولاand do not تحسبنَّever suppose اللهَGod يغفلُis heedless ساعةًfor a moment
ألاtake heed إنَّهindeed He يُمليgrants respite لكمto you ثُمَّthen يُمْهلُallows time
And never suppose that God is heedless even for a moment.
Do not assume God neglects a moment,
Take heed: He grants you respite, then allows you time.
Indeed, He takes account of you, then delays the reckoning.
لقدindeed خابَhas failed مَنwhoever أمسَىhas become لغيركَof someone besides You عابدًاa worshiper
وباءَand incurred بِطُولِwith prolonged الخِزيِdisgrace فهْوso he is مُضَلَّلُled astray
Indeed, whoever has become a worshiper of any but You has failed,
Failed is one who worships other than You by nightfall,
And incurred lasting disgrace; thus he is led astray.
Disgraced, misguided through endless days.
أيعبُدُdoes he worship قبرًاa grave أوor يسائلُpetitions جِيفةًa rotting corpse
ويَسجدُand prostrates himself للأوثانِto the idols فهْوso he is مُكَبَّلُshackled
Does he worship a grave or petition a rotting corpse,
Does one worship a grave, or ask the dead,
And prostrate himself before idols? He is thus shackled.
And prostrate to idols, all bound?
وإنْand not هيit إلاexcept سُنَّةٌa way مستقيمةٌupright
تَأبَّتْhas refused to yield فماso it does not ترتدُّturn back أوor تتبدَّلُchange
And it is nothing but an upright way,
It is but an upright way that never falters
It has refused to yield, and neither turns back nor changes.
Or changes, it only grew straight.
أيعلمُdoes he know أنَّthat اللهَGod لاno ربَّlord غيرُهُother than Him
ويَعبدُand worships دُونَbesides اللهِGod أوor يتعلَّلُmakes excuses
Does he know that God alone is Lord,
Does one know that there is no god but Him,
Yet worship another besides God, or make excuses?
Then worship others besides God, and make excuses?
فقُمْso stand بخشوعٍwith humility للذيbefore Him who فطرَcreated العُلَىthe high heavens
وزيَّنَand adorned دُنْياهاtheir lowest heaven بماwith what هوit يَجْمُلُis beautiful
So stand humbly before Him who created the high heavens,
So stand devoutly for the One who shaped creation,
And adorned their lowest heaven with what is beautiful,
And adorned the world with beauty.
لِيَدْحَرَto drive away عنهاfrom it الجنَّthe jinn إنْif هَمَّmakes an attempt مُنْصِتٌa listener
ونُورًاand a light لناfor us يَهديguides، وكلٌّand each مُؤَجَّلُhas an appointed term
To drive the jinn away from it, should a listener make an attempt,
To banish jinn from it, if any try to eavesdrop,
And as a light to guide us; each has an appointed term.
And as a light to guide us, while each is deferred.
وكنْand be مُخْبِتًاhumbly submissive للهِto God ربِّكَyour Lord واصطبرْand persevere patiently
فقدfor indeed فازَhas triumphed فيهاin it الصَّابرُthe patient one المتوكِّلُthe one who trusts in God
And be humbly submissive to God, your Lord, and persevere patiently.
Be humble to your Lord, and patiently persevere,
For in it the patient one who trusts in God has triumphed.
For the patient and trusting are indeed successful.
ولاand do not تَبْغِtransgress إنَّindeed البَغيَtransgression فاعلَمْso know ندامةٌremorse
وكلُّand every امرئٍperson يُجزَىis recompensed بماfor what هوhe يفعلُdoes
And do not transgress; know that transgression brings remorse.
Do not covet, for coveting brings regret,
And every person is recompensed for what he does.
And each is recompensed for their deeds.
