By your Lord, who was it that bestowed imagination upon you?

So it fluttered before you with the flutter of beauty.

And dawn, sweet of visions, danced with you.

And the full moon beheld in you the most radiant image.

And the sun gloried in you—a world of passion.

Were you, then, the sun's world of final return?

And the garden wooed you in ecstasy,

And you wooed it coyly, not lovesick.

You poured for it every exquisite fragrance,

And you adorned it with light—the brightest pearls.

And the garden gave you in return the magic of wishes—

Visions, and the magic of union's perfumes.

    زها عبقري الجنى والخلال

    So union with you was nothing but eternity;

It shone, wondrous in its fruits and virtues.

And what is poetry, if in your hands it is not

An ally of love's anguish, or content in obedience?

And what are flowers, if your words find no harmony

With their hopes, in rapture and pride?

I seek protection for you from the evil of these mortals,

And from the vipers' venomous breaths among them.
