Blessings and salutations upon the best of messengers,

the Prophet of guidance, Taha, the beloved, the favored.

O driver of the caravans from this Tihamah,

bound for the best of messengers, the perfected one—

Muhammad, sent with truth and faithfulness,

with the revealed words and deeds he brought.

He attained a rank no perfected one had attained,

and stood in a station where no messenger had stood.

When you set down your saddlebags in his land,

then, by God, convey my greetings to the best of messengers.

And say: “Your weary, sorrowful lover—O my tormentor—

is captive to your love; your distance is killing me.”

So, by God, ask him for compassion and elevation for me,

that I may gain from him a visit and a hope fulfilled.

May I visit him! If only I knew how long

I must remain in separation’s torment, having found no way to him.

I lay down my palm to kiss the dust, beholding

his lattice and tomb, as the spirit is sent down.

And I polish my heart, then my tarnish and my heart’s flesh,

and witness the outpouring of his lights raining down.

He honors me amid the heights of gardens and a meadow,

and I sip every bounty from his overflowing abundance.

He grants my hope—indeed, accepts my visit,

and makes the verse renowned—indeed, [answers] my entreaty.

How long must this lover suffer? By God, my master,

will you grant me favor before death and accept me?

    فأنت لنا ذخر وحصن وموثل

    So I beg you, Taha: answer me and grant me favor;

for you are our treasure, our fortress, and our refuge.

And you are our cave, where we may take shelter amid

every mortal peril or poverty that may befall.

So say: “My son, behold: what you hope for has come to you—indeed,

the goal you desire, leaving you quenched and [relieved].

O Mirghani, O Hashim, you turn toward us,

in this abode and the next, always [unclear].

We bestow the finest reward upon you and grant you acceptance,

granting your wish at once, without delay.

We have lifted the dense veils, rejection, and estrangement,

and union in both abodes has no [delay].

    أشرنا اليك بالوداد المكمل

    With love from us, we nurture and support you;

we have signaled to you with perfect affection.”

Who will do me justice against a graceful beloved, possessed of beauty,

in whom dwell all wishes and desires? If only I had

a full moon of dazzling purity to cherish!

For I am enamored of him and hopeful of union.

His figure sways like a tender branch,

like a slender-waisted maiden, swaying and inclining.

O precious branch, bend toward me in compassion!

Do you turn from your love-worn one, a distracted lover?

I seek your help, my master, holding fast to you,

and through all ages I say: “I have none but you.”

Through you I hope for every opening, outpouring, and wish,

for you are a door that leads to the Judge.

Through you I hope for every goal, generosity, and bounty,

and happiness, good fortune, and unveiling attained.

    بكم سيدي يحسن ختامي وموثل

    Through you, my master, I find happiness in life and circumstance;

through you, my master, my end and refuge are made good.

Through you, my master, there lifts from every calamity

the dust of death; may you remain a [protector] in distress.

So give me a cup of your drink’s intoxicating strength,

not merely a tasting sip of pure wine and sweet-flowing water.

God’s blessings be upon you as long as the east wind blows,

    and as long as the lightning of opening flashes, gleaming like light;

whenever a yearning lover says in his verses of praise:

“Blessings and salutations upon the best of messengers,”

and upon his noble family and companions, through whom we have

    safety from God, my friend, from every difficulty;

whenever a lover yearns and his heart is stirred,

and a turtledove warbles and a nightingale calls.
