    By your parting, not by keen, severing blades,

    you cleft my heart—indeed, you roused my mourners.

    My brother, O my brother, you burst the spring of my eye

    with tears that streamed across the breadth of my cheek.

    Do you die while an ember of longing burns in my heart,

    which love decreed should linger in a mourner's soul?

    فكيف يبعد لم يجز بالركائب

    Separation is grievous though only one night old;

    how much more a distance no riding beasts have crossed?

    Do you die, my brother, among strangers,

    bereft of loved ones, without kin?

    The cruel herald proclaimed your death, and wailing rose

    at his cry from the lands on every side.

    Humanity answers him in every kind of tongue:

    “Hold! These death-tidings are the mother of calamities!

    Do you announce to us the death of loftiness, glory, and piety?

    Your tidings have overwhelmed mankind with misfortunes.”

    He said: “A youth has died, against Hashim's wishes,

    a companion of lofty deeds, of Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib.”

    ولم تفلق الهامات بيض القواضب

    He died, though no dusky spears had bent in his defense,

    nor had bright, cleaving swords split heads;

    ولم يملأ الآفاق نقع السلاهب

    nor had Shabiyya's young men been struck down beside him,

    nor had the dust of tall steeds filled the horizons;

    nor had hosts borne down upon treacherous Time

    to champion him, reinforced by further hosts.

    He announced your death to the tidings of sacred law and guidance,

    he announced your death to the sons of eminence and rank,

    نعاك خضم العلم نائي الجوانب

    he announced your death to the people of glory, virtue, and reason.

    He mourned you, an ocean of knowledge with far-flung shores;

    نعاك حساما ماضيا بالمضارب

    he mourned you, a youth of forbearance, generosity, and nobility;

    he mourned you, a sword keen along its edges;

    نعاك وفيا لا تخون بصاحب

    he mourned you, pious, discerning, refined;

    he mourned you, faithful, never betraying a friend;

    he mourned you, a sweet-natured, comely youth,

    graceful in your swaying walk, the desire of budding maidens.

    فلن ترني في ميدانها جري غالب

    In announcing your death, he mourned the fairest rhymes and their masters;

    you will no longer see me race victorious in their arena.

    Eclipse has indeed struck down the horizon's sun upon the horizon,

    at losing you, O full moon of guidance amid deep darkness.

    I had indeed expected you to rise above all mankind

    through knowledge borne by singing camel-drivers on their night journeys.

    But my time thwarted me with the reverse of what I foresaw,

    and rebuffed my hope with a swindler's bargain.

    Are you borne away, light of my eye, from your home,

    where we so often endured arrows from an eyebrow's bow?

    My brother, my heart has indeed lain in your burial niches,

    and I see my body departing after one already gone.

    Do you think I shall remain while you lie hidden

    in a deep-bottomed cleft with close-set walls?

    And you are washed in the water of clouds—did they not know

    that you are purer than the waters of the clouds?

    And camphor is brought to you for [perfuming?],

    though through you the soul grows fragrant, O son of the purest.

    I marvel at people who kept your company out of love

    and tasted your affection, pure at its springs:

    they see you, an unsheathed blade upon a rock,

    turned for washing from side to side.

    Their eyes behold you, a lifeless body stretched out,

    yet they have not died of grief among those tents.

    وما ذبلت هذي لاحدى العجايب

    I see necks that have lifted Yadhbul from the earth;

    that these have not withered is one of the wonders.

    The Holy Spirit escorts you, followed

    by Gabriel, surrounded by those hosts.

    The Trustworthy Spirit himself lays you in the tomb

    within Durah, not in these barren plains,

    and with rain from the limpid downpour of clouds

    to water your tomb, exalted in rank.

    Is my soul not yours? What is Mutammim beside me?

    For with you, my brother, I have not fulfilled even part of my hopes.
