أَفَأَعلواmust I then rise عَنbeyond قُدرَةِthe capacity of الإِنسانِhumankind
What thanks can my tongue render?
What words of thanks can my tongue provide
Must I then rise beyond human capacity?
For one so high above all humankind?
وَإِذاand if شِئتَyou wish وَصفَa description of تِلكَthose السَجاياvirtues
أَيُّwhat شَيءٍthing يُحيطُهُencompasses it تِبيانيmy explanation
And if you wish for a description of those virtues,
And were I to attempt your virtues to describe
What can my explanation encompass?
What power of speech could that task find?
إِنif أَقُلI say فاضَلvirtuous فَماليthen I have no فَضلٌmerit
أَوor أَقَلَّI say سَيِّدٍa lord فَقَدرُكَfor your stature غانيself-sufficient
If I call you virtuous, there is no merit in that for me;
If I say you are noble, 'tis your nobility,
Or call you a lord—your stature stands on its own;
Or say you are mighty, that power is yours alone.
أَوor أَقُلI say شاعِرa poet بَليغَeloquent مَجيدٍillustrious
Or call you an eloquent, illustrious poet,
If I say you're a poet whose verse is majesty,
Who strings pearls in wondrous meanings,
Arranging pearls in finest diction shown.
قالَتِsaid الناسُpeople ماnot أَتَيتُI came بِشَيءٍwith anything
ذاكَthat أَمرٌa matter مُشاهِدٌplainly seen لِلعَيانِto the eye
People would say I had offered nothing:
They say I've said nothing that's not plainly seen
That is a matter plain to the eye.
By any who behold your visage keen.
أَوor أَقُلI say مُحسِنُa benefactor فَكُلُّكَfor all of you حُسنُgoodness
لاnot يُجاريكَrivals you فيin المَحاسِنِvirtues ثانيanother
Or call you a benefactor—for you are goodness through and through;
Or if I say you're generous, all can glean
No other can rival you in virtues.
None can your benevolence preen.
وَاِختِصارَand the summation of الكَلامِspeech أَنَّكَthat you فيin الفَضexcellence (word continues)

لِcompletion of 'excellence' وَسامَa medal فيupon صَدرِهاits breast هَذاthis الزَمانِage
And, in short, in excellence you are
In short, you are the honor and crest acclaimed
A medal upon the breast of this age.
Of excellence in this age. Constancy your fame.
كُلُّall ماthat فيكَin you مُصطَفىchoice وَحَقيقُand worthy
بِثَناءِof praise الأَخدانِclose friends وَالأَقرانِand peers
Everything in you is choice and worthy
All you are is Mustafa, the paragon supernal,
Of the praise of close friends and peers.
Praised by comrades and compeers eternal.
فَتَقَبَّلso accept مَولايَmy lord حُسنَthe beauty of ثَنائيmy praise
أَنَّهُthat it جاءَcame مِنfrom صَميمِthe very depths of الجِنانِthe heart
So accept, my lord, my fine praise;
So accept, my lord, these inadequate words of praise
It has come from the very depths of the heart.
From the garden of my heart they raise.
