when the courier [came] bearing news of joy.

the land’s mighty one, our only refuge,

a gracious favor that exalts his eminence—

a medal whose glory delights—a badge of honor

whose bonds his fortunate star draws tight.

So joy spread, and hearts opened,

and from praise gleamed pearls, neatly strung.

And the devoted man, hoping for his happiness, said,

recording its date and adding to the glad tidings:

Under glory’s loftiest rising star there came

    to Bastouros a glorious decoration.
