قالَتshe said لَطيفَto a phantom خَيالٍof fancy زارَنيvisited me وَمَضىand departed
مُخلِفاًleaving behind فيin فُؤاديmy heart أَعظَمَthe greatest الكَمَدِgrief
She said to a phantom vision that visited me and departed,
A gentle apparition visited me and vanished,
Leaving behind the deepest grief in my heart:
Leaving in my heart the greatest yearning.
إِنif كُنتَyou were حَقّاًtruly لَهُof him أَبصَرتَyou saw فيin سَنِةٍa doze
بِاللَهِby God صِفهُdescribe him وَلاand do not تَنقُصdiminish وَلاand do not تَزِدِadd
“If you truly saw him in a doze,
If you truly saw him in a year,
By God, describe him; leave nothing out and add nothing.”
For God's sake, describe him, do not subtract or add.
فَقالَso he said أَبصَرتَهُI saw him لَوif ماتَhe died مِنfrom ظَمَأthirst
عَلىupon لَهيبٍa flame جَوىof love’s anguish فيin القَلبِthe heart مُتَّقِدِblazing
Then he said, “I saw him: were he to die of thirst,
You saw him - if he died of thirst
With a flame of love’s anguish blazing in his heart,
On raging flames kindling in the heart,
وَالماءُand the water أَقرَبُnearer مِنthan عَينٍan eye لِحاجِبِهاto its eyebrow
وَقُلتُand I said قِفstop عَنfrom وُرودِapproaching الماءِthe water لَمdid not يُرِدِapproach it
And water nearer than an eye is to its brow,
And water closer than the eye of his beloved,
And were I to say, ‘Keep away from the water,’ he would not approach it.”
Still he would refuse the water's coming.
قالَتshe said صَدَّقتَyou spoke truly وَفاءَfaithfulness الحُبِّof love عادَتَهُhis habit
وَكَمand how much لَهُhe has فيin اِحتِمالِbearing الوَجدِpassionate longing مِنof جَلَدِfortitude
She said, “You spoke truly; faithfulness in love is his habit,
You speak truly - constancy in love is his habit,
And how much fortitude he has in bearing passionate longing!”
And how much patience he has to endure torment!
فَقُلتُso I said وَالشَهدُand the honey مَنfrom فيهاher mouth يُخَيَّلُis imagined ليto me
ياO بَردَcoolness هَذاthis الَّذيwhich قالَتshe said عَلىupon كَبِديmy liver
Then I said, imagining honey from her mouth,
So I said, and the honey that seems to me
“Oh, how cooling upon my liver are these words she spoke!”
In her words, "Oh, the chill that gripped my liver!"
