أَرَىI see فيin ابنيmy son مشابهَresemblances منfrom عليٍAli
أَرَى في ابني مشابهَ من عليٍ
ومنand from يَحيىYahya وذاكَand that بهِfor him خَليقُfitting
ومن يَحيى وذاكَ بهِ خَليقُ
In my son I see a resemblance to Ali,
I see in my son resemblances to Ali,
And to Yahya—and that well becomes him.
And to Yahya—and that befits him.
فإنso if يشبههماhe resembles them both خُلُقاin character وخَلقاًand in physical form
فإن يشبههما خُلُقا وخَلقاً
فَقَدfor indeed تسريflow; course إِلىtoward الشَّبهِresemblance العُروقِthe veins; bloodlines
فَقَد تسري إِلى الشَّبهِ العُروقِ
For if he resembles them both in character and form,
If he resembles them both in character and form,
Then resemblance may indeed run in the veins.
For likeness can flow through the veins.
