بَلْrather نَحْنُwe كُنَّاwe were أَهْلَهاits people فأَبادَناthen destroyed us
بَلْ نَحْنُ كُنَّا أَهْلَها فأَبادَنا
صُروفُvicissitudes اللياليthe nights والجدودُand the fortunes العواثِرُstumbling
صُروفُ الليالي والجدودُ العواثِرُ
Rather, we were its people; then we were destroyed
by the vicissitudes of the nights and stumbling fortunes.
