نزعنا وأمّرنا وبكر بن وائل
تجرit drags خصاهاits testicles تبتغيit seeks منsomeone whom تحالفit allies with
تجر خصاها تبتغي من تحالف
We deposed and installed rulers, while Bakr ibn Wāʾil,
We deposed and appointed rulers, while Bakr ibn Wa'il

وماand not باتspent the night بكريٌّa man of Bakr منin الدهرtime ليلةa night
وما بات بكريٌّ من الدهر ليلة
فيصبحthen he awakens إلاexcept وهوwhile he is للذّلِwith humiliation عارفacquainted
فيصبح إلا وهو للذّلِ عارف
And never, through all the ages, has a man of Bakr passed a night
And no man of Bakr has ever spent a night
and woken without knowing humiliation.
