Greet the dwelling, deserted after long ages,
Greet the abode though it lies desolate
a wasteland at the edge of upper Dhat Imhad.
In a wilderness, lofty, smooth and serene

Of the dwelling, when I found it, nothing remained
Of the abode remains naught I found
but the tent-sites of goodly folk and tent pegs.
Save fragrant herbs and tent-pegs between

It seemed, in the wastes, when it came into view,
As though, on the day it rose from the vale
from the hollow of Dhat al-Sana, like threadbare striped cloaks.
Of Al-Sana, it donned brocades unseen

وطال بالطرف إفراعي وإصعادي
And I did not recognize it until I stopped beside it,
No sooner glimpsed it than I halted by
and long did my gaze travel downward and upward.
Prolonging my gaze up and down at the scene

Then, recognizing it, my eye streamed in torrents,
So the eye poured from knowing it a flood
like water-bearers pouring A'rad's water into a pool.
Like rainclouds watering deserts with sheen

يوما طويلا على عنسٍ وأقتادِ
So I remained, like an intoxicated drinker, held fast,
I lingered like one drunk, for many a day
for a long day, on a sturdy she-camel and saddle timbers.
By a graceful doe with fawns fat and lean

I let my gaze wander wearily, then turn it back
I send my gaze hither and thither to graze
over a wintering place, a summering place, and a frequented haunt,
On its glades, halts, and pathways terrene

No hearts between our clan are estranged
nor was what we concealed of our secrets revealed.
Nor secrets from our midst filched or purloined
