سقيت من الصهباء حتى تقطّرا
And to a fair-skinned man among the descendants of Saʿd ibn Mālik
Whiter than the sons of Sa’d ibn Malik
I served tawny wine until he toppled over,
I drank from the morning star until it dripped

شخوصاً فنادى يال سعد وكبّرا
And until, in his drunkenness, he saw the nearby figure
And until the near person in his intoxication
As several figures; he called, “O clan of Saʿd!” and cried, “God is greatest!”
Saw figures, so he called “Come, O Sa’d!” and exalted

أبى اللَه أن أستخَفّ وأسكرا
So I asked, “Are you drunk?” He said, in stubborn denial,
So I said, “You are drunk,” and he denied stubbornly
“God forbid that I should become lightheaded and drunk!”
“God forbid that I jest and get drunk!”

So I told him, “Drink—this is Babylonian wine;
So I said to him, “Drink this, it is Babylonian,
You would think it held fragrant musk and ambergris.”
You will imagine it to be fine musk and ambergris with it”

So when he tasted it, he spat it out, then he
Held himself together a while, silent and thoughtful.
Held himself together, silent and pensive,

And he said, “Pour it again.” I said, “Be patient a little while.”
And said “Do it again.” I said, “Wait a bit,”
Then he dozed a little, then rose and babbled.
He pondered a little, then stood up mumbling,

So I told him, “Sleep a while; perhaps what I see
So I said to him, “Sleep an hour, it seems
Of drunkenness will lay bare your manly backside.”
From the drunkenness there appears in you chatter.”
