Abu Bahr reins in things he desires,

And disapproves of them for the generous, affectionate man.

If you are a faultfinder, say what you wish,

And leave my drinking alone; I am not alone in it.

I shall drink it: tawny wine, its fragrance like musk,

And drink it at every gathering and assembly.

So counsel yourself, Ibn Qays, and leave me

And my judgment alone; mine is no fool's judgment.

And a woman said, 'O Har, are you restraining

Yourself from squandering?' I said to her, 'Be moderate.'

And do not bid me be prudent, for I

Have seen that the man of great wealth is not immortal.

And I have no fault but my morning draught of wine,

Whenever water mixes with it in the cup, it foams.

Aged and tawny, its fragrance like musk,

When it gives off fragrance, it dispels the thirsty one's burning thirst.

Take heed: sound judgment, whose path is clear, is nothing but

The opposite of what you said when you were my guide.

I shall drink it as long as a rider makes pilgrimage for God's sake,

Openly, alone and with everyone who joins me.

And I gladden my drinking companions and follow my desire,

And freely give away all that my hand possesses.

Such is life—not the life of Ibn Qays and his companions,

With their drinking of pure, chilled water.
