Salma has gone far away and now dwells among enemies,
I came to Salma and spent the night as a foe,
urging the unruly young she-camels toward them.
Urging my steed through dangerous terrain.

My people settled on the slope at Qanawayn,
My kinsmen's dwellings lay in ruins,
while she settled in the meadows of Bishah, then al-Rabab.
While the abodes of Bishah stood joyous and carefree.

My sword severed the bond with her, and I
With my sword I severed her ties to me, though I
deliberately bereaved Kilab of Khalid.
Grieve for Khalid who was trapped by the dogs.
وإنand though الأحوصينthe two Ahwases تولياهاthey both undertook it

وقدand already غضباthey both grew angry عليwith me فماso they did not أصاباboth hit the mark
And though the two Ahwases took it upon themselves,
The Banu Ahwas have taken her side,
and grew angry with me, they missed their mark.
And they rage against me but achieve nothing.

Deliberately I clothed them both in disgrace,
I clothed them in the ragged cloaks of paupers,
as I clothe their women in mourning garments.
As I clothe their women in tattered gowns.

And I, on the day at Ghamrah—without boasting—
On the day of Ghumarah, though no boast,
left behind the plunder and the much-prized captives.
I left behind plunder and desirable captives.

So I shall never revile Quraysh,
I will never vilify the Quraysh,
yet, despite that, I strike whoever has struck.
Though I was wronged by their actions.

For my people are not Tha'labah ibn Sa'd,
My people are not like Tha'labah ibn Sa'd,
nor Fazarah, with their shaggy necks.
Nor like Fazarah al-Shari, men of severed necks.

My people, if you ask, are the sons of Lu'ayy;
If the Banu Lu'ay are asked, they will tell people
in Mecca they taught men sword-fighting.
I taught them to wield blades.

We acted foolishly in following the sons of Baghid,
We acted foolishly by following the hated sons of Baghyiz
and forsaking those closest to us in descent:
And forsaking our kindred by birth.
سفاهةthe folly of فارطa water-scout لماwhen تروىhe drank his fill
هراقhe poured away الماءthe water واتبعand followed السراباthe mirage
the folly of a water-scout who, once he had drunk his fill,
The folly of one who forsakes what nurtures
poured away the water and followed the mirage.
And pursues a mirage across the sands!

By your life, I truly love Ka'b,
By your life! I love Ka'b and Samah,
and Samah, my brothers, as I love wine.
My brothers, who share my taste for wine.

Ghatafan is no father to me; rather,
Ghatafan are no kin by father to me,
Lu'ayy is my father—a truthful declaration.
Though Lu'ay is my sire, and that is the truth.
فلماthen when إنindeed رأيتI saw بنيthe sons of لؤيLu'ayy

Then, when I saw the sons of Lu'ayy,
When I look on the Banu Lu'ay,
I recognized affection and close kinship.
I recognize love and close kinship.

I raised my spear when they said, 'Quraysh,'
I brandished my spear when the Quraysh said,
and found their bearing and domed tents familiar.
"He resembles us in appearance and ancestral nobility."

I accompanied a band of them in Najd,
I kept company with a band of them in Najd
a torment to anyone who makes war on them.
Who torment any who make war on them.

And Rawahah the Qurashi furnished my saddle
I saddled my she-camel, swift as an oryx,
with his she-camel, expecting no reward.
Without thought for any reward.

As though the sword and the saddle-straps upon her
My sword and the quiver slung from her
and my saddlecloth had clothed a lean, sturdy wild ass.
Are like the fangs of a snarling hyena.

So, O God, I have incurred no sin,
By God! I gained no sins,
nor torn away a kinsman's veil.
Nor disgraced one to whom I owe protection.

Every day they raised against the battalions
Every day they prepare for the battalions
Mashrafi swords and spears.
The swords of Musharifah and al-Harb.

If I wished, I would be one of them,
If I wished, I could be one of them,
nor be sent wandering after the clouds,
But I will not follow the passing clouds.

Nor will I drink their brackish water every day,
driving flies away from their waters:
More teeming than it with flies.

brackish waters at a wretched night's lodging,
Bitter water from a rainless land
for a household of sickly brutes, chilled and hungry.
Where they dwell in wretched poverty.

As though a crown were fastened upon them,
It is as if the Pleiades were strung over them,
when their gaunt milk-camels come to water.
When their rain clouds pass by, empty of showers.
