Ho, convey a message from me to al-Nuʿmān:

How, then, will you face those who court the greatest calamities?

وأنت طويل البغي أبلخ معور

وأنت طويل البغي أبلخ معور

فزوع إذا ما خيف إحدى العظائم

فزوع إذا ما خيف إحدى العظائم

While you persist in oppression, arrogant and vulnerable,

Quick to panic whenever some great calamity is feared.

فما غره والمرء يدرك وتره

بأروع ماضي الهم من آل ظالم

بأروع ماضي الهم من آل ظالم

What emboldened him—when a man can exact his vengeance—

Against a gallant man, firm of purpose, of Ẓālim’s house?

كميش التوالي عند صدق العزائم

A man of trust, resolute of heart, courageous,

Nimble of foot when resolve is in earnest.

فأقسم لولا من تعرض دونه

فأقسم لولا من تعرض دونه

لعولي بهدي الحديدة صارم

لعولي بهدي الحديدة صارم

So I swear: were it not for the one who stood in his defense,

A keen sword would have been raised over the blade’s sacrificial victim.

فأقتل أقواما لئاما أذلة

فأقتل أقواما لئاما أذلة

يعضون من غيظ أصول الأباهم

يعضون من غيظ أصول الأباهم

Then I would kill men, base and abject,

Who bite the bases of their thumbs in rage.

تبنى سنان ضلة أن يخيفني

تبنى سنان ضلة أن يخيفني

ويأمن ما هذا بفعل المسالم

ويأمن ما هذا بفعل المسالم

Sinān has misguidedly undertaken to frighten me,

And remain safe himself; this is no peaceful man’s conduct.

تمنيت جهدا أن تضيع ضلامتي

كذبت ورب الراقصات الرواسم

كذبت ورب الراقصات الرواسم

You wished with all your might that my grievance would go unredressed.

You lie, by the Lord of the prancing, swift-striding camels!

The oath of a man at whose breast baseness has never suckled,

And whom the bloodlines of the base have never encompassed.
