You rouse every spiteful foe and set him howling against us;
You toss about uneasily for us whenever a torrent rages,
And before this, we used to call you Asim—‘Protector.’
And before it we used to call you a protector.
بِحَمدِwith praise of إِلَهيmy God أَنَّنيthat I لَمnot أَكُنI was لَهُمfor them

Praise be to my God that I was not, for them,
By the grace of my God I was not for them
A crow on the left, plucking feathers and presaging doom.
A northern raven plucking out feathers unceasingly.
كَأَنَّas though عَلَيهِupon him تاجَthe crown آلِthe house of مُحرِّقٍMuharriq
بِأَنbecause ضُرَّwas harmed مَولاهُhis patron وَأَصبَحَand he became سالِماunharmed
As though he wore the crown of the house of Muharriq,
As if on him were a crown of the burning dynasty,
Because his patron was harmed while he came away unscathed.
Since his master was harmed and he became submissive.
