تلاطمُ موج به من سحاب

The night grew still, and the sky became a surging sea.

The night wore on, the air grew murky,

Waves of cloud clash within it.

Waves surged, churned by clouds so lurky.

وقد برق البرق في لجه

وقد برق البرق في لجه

فما أهول البحر فيه التهاب

فما أهول البحر فيه التهاب

And lightning flashed in its depths.

Lightning flashed in pitch darkness,

How terrifying the sea, with fire blazing within it!

How dreadful was the sea's starkness!

وتنقض من بينه الكهربا

وتنقض من بينه الكهربا

ء كالنار لا كانقضاض الشهاب

ء كالنار لا كانقضاض الشهاب

And electricity plunges from its midst,

Electricity cracked through the gloom

like fire, not like a meteor's plunge.

Like fire, not shooting stars in bloom.

وللرعد صوت تكاد الجبا

وللرعد صوت تكاد الجبا

ل تندك من هوله والهضاب

ل تندك من هوله والهضاب

And thunder's voice almost makes the mountains

Thunder roared, mountains quaking,

and the hills crumble from its terror.

As if about to come crashing and breaking.

وتعصف في الجو هوج الريا

وتعصف في الجو هوج الريا

ح حاملة كالجبال التراب

ح حاملة كالجبال التراب

And fierce winds rage through the air,

Winds raged, whipping up dust clouds able

carrying dust like mountains.

To carry off mountains as if they were gravel.

وقد راح مختفياً كل حي

وقد راح مختفياً كل حي

وقد لزم الصمت حتى الكلاب

وقد لزم الصمت حتى الكلاب

And every living creature has gone into hiding;

Every living thing hid from the din,

and even the dogs have fallen silent.

Even dogs were strangely silent within.

وقد أصبح القفر بحراً ولم

وقد أصبح القفر بحراً ولم

يكن فيه بالامس غير السراب

يكن فيه بالامس غير السراب

And the wasteland has become a sea, though

The wasteland became an ocean, though

yesterday there was nothing in it but a mirage.

Just yesterday it was only mirage and show.

هو الهول نلحظه خلسة

هو الهول نلحظه خلسة

ومن مكمن آمن خلف باب

ومن مكمن آمن خلف باب

It is terror itself; we watch it furtively,

We watch the horror covertly,

and from a safe hiding place behind a door.

From safety behind a door firmly.

شغلنا به عن سوانا وما

شغلنا به عن سوانا وما

به شغلت عن دمانا الذباب

به شغلت عن دمانا الذباب

It distracts us from everyone else, yet

It distracted us from our own plight,

it does not distract the flies from our blood.

And from our wounds the flies took flight.

اذا كان ليس له قائد

لأصبحت الارض منه خراب

لأصبحت الارض منه خراب

If it had no guide,

With no leader to guide or command,

the earth would surely be laid waste by it.

The land would be ruined as if by a hand.

تفكرت في رحمة أرسلت

تفكرت في رحمة أرسلت

الى الناس من بين هذا العذاب

الى الناس من بين هذا العذاب

I reflected on a mercy sent

I thought of the mercy God did send,

to people from amid this torment.

To aid mankind through horrors He did end.

فآمنت أن احتكاك القوى

فآمنت أن احتكاك القوى

حياة لمن فوق هذا التراب

حياة لمن فوق هذا التراب

And so I believed that the friction of forces

I believed the clash of forces so strong

is life for those upon this soil.

Gives life to those who to dust belong.
