O you who turn away, what is this coldness?

And how long this shunning, when the world is fleeting?

Mortals do not own their lifespans,

that you should prolong your estrangement from us as you please.

    Suppose you erred—who, I wonder,

among humankind has never once done wrong?

Or suppose I reproached you out of sorrow—

was I not worthy of consolation?

May man perish—how utterly he denies

the rights of God and brotherhood!

    كلفاً بالحسن فينا لا البغاء

    We love beauty at its source;

ours is a passion for beauty, not sexual vice.

Then we sought it, just as

the thirsty seek water in summer.

Yet we have lacked it, just as

a blind man lacks a glimmer of light.

And since I came to be, it has been the root of my misery,

while for others it is a path to happiness.

It is my lot, and in bearing it I am

compelled, in submission to the decrees of fate.

In closeness lie loyalty and sincerity,

and I regard absence from sight as coldness.

Here is the cord—rejoin it as

it was; seek forgiveness, and greet me with goodwill.
