    My soul has wearied of life and grown bored,

    And so the free man in my time grows weary.

    Wherever I turn my face, I see nothing

    But a shackle of hypocrisy holding sway,

    ورؤوس أحرى بها أن تهشم

    And faces—perdition to such faces!

    And heads that well deserve to be smashed;

    وسفيه على الكرام تهجم

    And people, ranging from a gullible ignoramus

    To a fool who has assailed the noble;

    And barefoot and hungry folk among humankind.

    No one among people feels pity or shows mercy.

    Indeed, the worst of creatures is one who does not understand,

    And one who does not see—the deaf, the mute.

    It is a state God willed for humankind,

    For a purpose the Guardian knows best.

    There is no hope in those of us who have adopted European ways,

    No, nor in my old-fashioned, turbaned brother.

    ض فحتى متى الرواية تختم

    Long have we acted out misery upon the earth;

    So when will the play be brought to a close?

    And when will the curtain be lowered, and the earth

    Shatter along with those upon its surface?
