رب لحن سرى مع النسمات

قد جرت من رنينه عبراتي

Many a melody drifted with the breezes,

and my tears flowed at its ringing.

وكلام سمعته من حبيب

سحر القلب منه بالنبرات

And words I heard from a beloved

enchanted the heart with their tones.

رب موسيقية سرت من جماد

أنشعت مهجتي وأحيت مواتي

Many a musical strain issuing from lifeless matter

revived my soul and quickened what lay dead within me.

هل تمشت بها الحياة فجادت

بحياة تسربت لحياتي

Did life course through it, so that it bestowed

a life that seeped into my own?

إن بعض الألحان والنغمات

قد أرتني الأكوان متسعات

Indeed, some melodies and notes

have shown me the worlds stretching wide.

رب صوت سمعته من بعيد

دلني وقعه على الحركات

Many a sound I heard from afar—

its resonance revealed the movements to me.

ومغن سمعته في الفنغرا

ف تصورت ما له من صفات

And a singer I heard on the phonograph—

I imagined the qualities he possessed.

قد تبينت أن للأصوات

صلة في الخفاء بالكائنات

I have come to see that sounds have

a hidden bond with beings,

كمعان تلوح في البسمات

وكلام يقال بالنظرات

like meanings that glimmer in smiles

and words spoken through glances.

كم حبى سمعي الحديد لفكري

صوراً صاغها من الاصوات

How often my keen hearing bestowed upon my mind

images it fashioned from sounds!

كيف تستعرض الخواطر شكلا

ضمن ما للهواء من موجات

How do thoughts display themselves as forms

within the waves of the air?

أترى كوننا وما قد حواه

وحدة رغم ما بدى من شتات

Do you see our universe and all it holds

as a unity, despite its apparent dispersal,

سلكتها جميعها في زمام

منذ خلق الوجود أقدر ذات

all of it threaded onto a single rein

by the mightiest Being since existence was created?

ثم قد كان كالدليل على الله

اختلاف الألوان واللهجات

Then there was, as a sign pointing to God,

the diversity of colors and dialects.
