  3. والطير لا تقوى بلا

    ريش على الطيران

    And birds cannot, without

    Feathers, take flight.

  4. والعمر بين دقائق

    ماض وبين ثوان

    And life, between minutes,

    Passes—and between seconds.

  5. والنفس في أسر الأسى

    والدمع في جريان

    And the soul is in sorrow’s captivity,

    And tears are flowing.

  6. فإذا علمت بحالتي

    يبكيك ما أبكاني

    Then, when you learn of my plight,

    What made me weep will make you weep.

  7. والموت خير من حيا

    ة اليأس والأحزان

    And death is better than a life

    Of despair and sorrows.

  8. كم أبت من سعيي الحثيث

    بصفقة الخسران

    How often have I returned from my tireless striving

    With a losing bargain!

  9. أو كل ذي النفس الكبي

    رة مخفق بزماني

    Or is everyone with a great soul

    Unsuccessful in my time?

  10. لي قبل هذا أمان

    والآن مالي أماني

    Before this, I had hopes;

    And now I have no hopes.

  11. كرهت حتى حياتي

    والناس مما أعاني

    I have come to hate even my life,

    And people, because of what I endure.

  12. تقلب النفس تبعاً

    لتقلبات الزمان

    The soul changes in accordance

    With the vicissitudes of time.
