A hope severed the cord of hope.

Woe to you, O fortune! Will you not smile on me?

I longed for, my hope failed me.

I do not know whether my fate bears a grudge

Against me, that it cast me down from on high.

Is a pride never ascribed to any man.

No misfortune shook me from a love

That enters the soul through the gateway of the eyes.

Is sharper than the steel of a cleaving sword.

I care not, so long as my beloved is fair,

Whether this life lasts long or does not.

    Moving wherever desire inclines.

Where is my time of revelry, and can

Its like be had in the days to come?

The day my companions all swayed along

Like drunkards around that watering place,

Around water whose clarity was like the sky,

    Resounding in its hurried course,

    And greenery upon those hills,

Rippling beneath the east wind like velvet,

    And lush groves whose willows

Seemed to weep at the brook's moaning,

And upon them a tearful nightingale—

Alas for my soul at the nightingale's weeping!

When time was met in moments like those

With wines made delicate as love verse,

And the field's flowers smiled for us,

    Revealing mouths made for kisses.

That was a time—where is its like for me?

Oh, for the pleasures of former days!
