وَرَأَينَني شَيخاً صَحَوتُ كَبيرا
Indeed, the fair women have marveled greatly,
The young women were quite amazed
And saw me an old man, grown sober in my old age.
When they saw me as an old white-haired sage

حَسبُ الكَبيرِ مُجَرَّباً مَخبورا
The fair women's aim was to seek my goodwill;

It is enough for an elder to be experienced and tested.
But for the aged, experience serves as protection

Indeed, I give freely to a close friend when he draws near,
For a dear friend, I'd give my wealth when asked

And leave him well provided unharassed

And if I seek a return for what I gave him,
And if I hoped for payment for what I have given
Then that is enough to taint a gift.
Bitterness for the seeker would be sufficient recompense

Indeed, I am a man of virtuous character; I do not find
I'm a man who pardons all of mankind's plights
The paths of generosity rough, O Umaym.
