and by the Lord of every penitent who spends the night in supplication,
reciting the Book diligently, never desisting:
لاnot أُنكرنَّI shall deny الَّذيwhat أَولَيتَنيyou bestowed on me أَبَداًever

حَتّىuntil أُعِدّI am counted مَعwith الهلكىthe dead إِذاwhen هَلكواthey perish

until I am numbered among the dead when they perish.
إِنَّindeed الخِلافَةَthe caliphate لَمّاwhen أُظعِنَتit was made to depart ظَعَنَتit departed

Indeed, when the caliphate was driven out, it departed
from the people of Yathrib, when they followed a path other than guidance.

لَمّاwhen رأَىsaw اللَّهُGod فيagainst عثمانَUthman ماwhat انتَهَكواthey violated
It passed to its rightful people among them, and to its heir,
when God saw the outrage they committed against Uthman.

أَيwhat دَمٍblood لاهُدواmay they not be guided مِنout of غَيِّهِمtheir error سَفَكواthey shed
Those who shed his blood in injustice and disobedience—
what blood they shed—may they not be guided out of their error!
والهاتِكيand those who tore سترthe veil of ذيone possessing حقٍّa right وَمَحرَمَةٍand inviolability

فأَيّso what سترٍa veil عَلىover أَشياعِهِمtheir partisans هَتَكواthey tore
And those who tore the veil of one with rights and inviolability—
what a veil protecting their own partisans they thus tore apart!
والفاتِحيand those who opened بابa gate قُفلٍa lock لاnot يَزالُceases بِهِat it
قَتلٌkilling بِقَتلٍfor killing إِلىfor دَهرٍages وَمعتركُand battle
And those who opened a locked gate, where there will always be
killing for killing, and battle, for ages to come.

And the horses are grim-faced, spattered with blood;
the arms upon their champions proclaim the death of Arwa's son—

every gleaming Indian sword and ample coat of mail,
covering the fingertips, with interlaced links in its weave.
قَدindeed نالَovertook جُلَّهُمُmost of them حصرٌconfinement بِمحصرةٍin a place of siege
وَنالَand overtook فتَّاكَهُمtheir assassins فَتكٌassassination بِماfor what فَتَكواthey murdered
Most of them were hemmed in, trapped in a siege,
and their assassins were slain for the murders they committed.
قَرّتwere cooled بِذاكَby that عيونٌeyes واشتَفينَand they found healing بِهِthrough it
وَقَدand indeed يَقَرُّbrings comfort بِعَينِto the eye of الثائرthe avenger الدَّركُattained redress
Eyes were cooled by that and found healing in it;
and attained redress may well cool the avenger's eye.
وَكانَand it was جلَّthe greater part of ديونٍdebts فاقتضينَso they were exacted بِهِthrough it
وَقَدand sometimes يلوّيputs off الغَريمَthe creditor الماطِلُthe stalling debtor المَعِكُthe contentious one
And most of the debts were thus exacted through it;
and a stalling, contentious debtor may put his creditor off.
وَذَلِكُمand that (to you all) لِذَويfor those with الأَضغانِrancor مَوعِظَةٌa lesson

إنif معشرa people عَنfrom هدىًguidance أَوor طاعَةٍobedience أُفكواare turned away
And that is a lesson for those who harbor rancor,
if a people are turned from guidance or obedience,

or should the earth stretch out beneath them, only to hurl them
to al-Muwayzij, or should al-Barak summon them.
