وَأَحمى ابنُ لَيلى كُلَّ مَدفَعِ تَلعَةٍ

عَليها وَقُفٍّ مِن قِنانِ الحَواجِرِ

And Ibn Layla made every gully’s outlet off-limits

The son of Layla defended every high fortress

To her, and every rocky rise among the peaks of the stony tracts.

Against which stood rows of armed warriors.
