The ray poured upon the radiant brow

a light of wondrous, rare beauty.

Then her cheeks grew rosy, and waves ran through

her tresses; she gazed with a languid eye.

Drowsiness lay in her eyelid, and in her eye's pupil

an arrow that makes us fly, though it does not fly.

    وتبسمت عن بارق في ماطر

    She passed, and her figure shamed a bough on the [sand dune];

and she smiled, revealing a lightning flash in a raincloud.

So I was dazed—I know not: was it the bewilderment of one oblivious

to himself, or was it at the dazzling beauty?

For when beauty reaches perfection, equal are

the pious man's heart and the libertine's eye in their response to it.

And when love takes possession of hearts, surely

they submit willingly to the commander's decree.

O breeze that blew, whose breath set swaying

a figure that exuded fragrant perfume,

is there in you, for the lovesick man whose heart is wounded,

a tenderness that eases the poet's suffering?

You feign indifference, and in indifference lies a deathblow

to love—nay, to a lamenting, bewildered heart.

You deliberately ignore my poems, though I

have placed in them, for you, the treasure of my jewels.

And I singled you out for verse and bounty,

and watered my love for you from the wellspring of my feelings.

And I abased my soul for your sake, though it is [precious],

and for your sake defied my reproachers and those who excuse me.

If you are ignorant of the path of love,

I have taken the path of one generous and forgiving.
