    لكنه بأريج الحب قد ثملا

    Poetry has not dried up, Layla, nor withered;

But it has grown drunk on love's fragrance.

Like a rose, it slumbers on the palm of dew; and when

The breezes' palm touches it, it thrills with joy.

And, dewy, it sways proudly; its fragrance

Scents the plain and perfumes the mountain.

Love has made each of its words flow smoothly,

And beauty has perfected its descriptions and similes.

And its meaning has softened its wording, turning it

Into a spring, flowing abundantly for whoever drinks.

O tenderness of poetry, what has love done to you,

That you became honey in the comb, putting honey to shame?

    If it sings, its melody is that of doves in spreading trees;

And if it pours, what falls is the fine spray of rain.

O knight of poetry, do not withhold its finest,

If you can; but if you cannot achieve it, refrain.

For there is no mercy in the critics' language

When they see flaws in the folds of your verse.

So utter only what lifts minds high,

What delights the ear and pleases the eye, attaining perfection.

For the poetry most enduring in minds is its finest:

What is graceful in wording and, in meaning, fulfills hope.

And elusive verses are but like wild beasts in

Their shying away, so do not rush your phrases.

And perfect it in rhyme, and choose its rare gems

From the finest, whether praise or love verse.

I have explored diverse themes in poetry,

And left no entrance among its doors unexplored.

I praised, chronicled, and vied in verse with those endowed with

Knowledge; and I have only ever worked with mastery.

If ignorance ranks my mount behind the caravan,

Then judgment rests on the work, not the rankings of the ignorant.

And I have become certain: the truest poetry

Is what is said of love, whether love is unjust or fair.

So marvel at it: if it draws away, our eyes overflow

With tears: longing's king called them, and they obeyed.

And if it willingly draws near after its estrangement,

For it we wove mantles that put fine robes to shame.

Were it not for love, souls would not soar, nor would

Peoples advance, nor the gray doves of the hills coo.

Nor would you see a generous man whose bounty reaches all,

Though misers scoff at his spending.

Or, had those created for love been sincere,

Injustice, deadly hatred, and loathing would have collapsed.

Blessed be love—how sweet its qualities!

So ask none but the wise about its merits.
