Do the scented breezes know this of me—that I

sing upon my string for her eyes?

Do they know that her eyes have wronged

my heart, and that their cruelty has destroyed it?

Does the one whose love has possessed me know—

who neither withheld from me nor held favors over me—

that I pass the days in longing

for her, and the night in thought—and that I—

and that, were I to let my tears recount

the tale of loving her, they would envy me

and hand me over to new tongues?

May God curse them, human and jinn alike!

I shunned love and kept my distance, yet

I fell, despite my experience and age.

So I do not know: did I fall through my mistrust,

stricken, or did I fall through my good faith?

Fine qualities and appearances have grown alike,

so I do not know whether to name her or allude.

I drank my finest wine and grew drunk, until

I reeled from it, though I had not drained my wine jar.

I answer every cooing bird with a melody

upon a bough; and I have my own song and art.

    تخلى عنه مرشده وعني

    And I have a heart that eyes direct;

its guide has abandoned it, and me.

Eyes that have left the eyelid no sleep,

nor the heart the sense to take its time.

So, O fragrance of life—and nothing remains

of it for us but the back of the shield—

and O hope of life, may my soul ransom you,

and all my hands possess, without holding favors over you.

Yours is the exquisite form; when it sways,

the bough envies it for its swaying.

And mine is the well-strung necklace; I have described its most precious

jewels upon your neck, so rest assured.

How, then, can one like me be blamed when he weeps

for one who cannot be won by wishing?
