حشاًa heart تذوبmelts وجفنٌand an eyelid غيرnot منطبقclosed
What remains of me lies between longing and sleeplessness:
My remnants are between yearning and sleeplessness
A melting heart, and an eyelid that will not close.
A burning love and an eye unable to close
قدhas لوَّنdyed الدهرُtime دمعيmy tears فيin تلوّنهits changing hues
فانهلَّso it streamed down منfrom أحمرred قانِdeep crimson ومنand from يققpure white
Time has dyed my tears with its changing hues,
Time has colored my tears in its changing
So they streamed down, some deep crimson and some pure white.
So it flows from red blood and from oozing pus
وقيّدتنيand they fettered me عنfrom شأوِa race حوادثهits calamities
وقلنَand they said دونكbefore you والغاياتand the goals فاستبقso race ahead
And its calamities fettered me, keeping me from the race,
And it has shackled me from the affairs of its events
And they said, 'The goals lie before you—race for them!'
And the goals are below you, so take the lead
فكيفso how يسبقُoutstrips مَنone who كانَwas الزمانtime لهُfor him
قيداًa fetter يجاذبهtugs against him عنaway from رسنهhis halter الغلقtightly fastened
How, then, can one outstrip others when time has become for him
So how can one who was shackled by time
A fetter that tugs him back by his tightly bound halter?
With fetters pulling him away from its padlock take the lead
ياO مَنone whom تعوِّذُهinvokes protection for him فيat كلِّevery شارقةٍsunrise

O you whom, at every sunrise,
O you who seek protection in every shining star
The mother of generosity entrusts to the Lord of mankind and daybreak for protection,
The Mother of Permissiveness, the Lord of mankind and daybreak

Pardon—may I be your ransom—a company on the paths of bounty,
Sorry, your ransom in the paths of dew, a group
Among whom I see noble deeds, their paths deserted.
I see generosity in them and the barrenness of the roads

Neither aversion nor weariness delayed their coming to you—
My tardiness from you is neither from resentment nor boredom
These signs of longing; nor is turning away in my nature.
Signs of longing, and refusal is not in my nature

And how could I neglect a right that belongs to you,
And how can I neglect a right of which you are worthy
When it is an obligation binding upon my neck?
When that was an inescapable duty upon my neck
