We have indeed tested you in bygone nights,

And found you worthy of eminence.

And we tested you, finding one free

By nature from change and inconstancy.

So we offered you unalloyed affection,

And you reciprocated it with noble deeds.

An oath—and the clouds are your palm—should I swear

By Him who brings forth the heavy clouds:

Reproach has alighted in your courtyard of virtue,

Never a dwelling for anything but perfection.

And verse pursued you for friendship’s due

From you, now fallen into neglect.
