Thus death enters the lions' forest,

And Radwa is buried in the depths of graves.

Thus the sanctuary of glory is violated,

And the full moons of guidance fall to the earth.

My life be ransom for him whose kin inherited from him

Nothing but eminence and firmly built glory.

O ally of bounty and brother of generosity,

Your day holds terror like the Day of Arrival.

May life-giving rain water you: you are not the one lost,

But my patience is the very thing that is lost.

So may I never say to life after you, 'Be sweet,'

Nor say to the clouds after you, 'Pour generously.'

Indeed, this newly won glory of yours has borne witness

To that ancestral glory of your people.

The sons of Hashim are necklaces, and you

Are the central jewel among those necklaces.

And if the ravages of death could be warded off

From a man by arms or numbers,

Young men would have risen to shield you from death,

Who are slighted when likened to lions.

    Radiant of face—and their swords

Are forged from death, not from iron.

And deadly fates go forth upon their spears,

    Poised amid red and black.

For whomever it seeks, whether masters or slaves.

Take comfort, Abu Salih; may you never be bereaved

    After this crushing calamity.

And the racers vied with you in glory,

But you outstripped them by a great distance.

So their standing fell into decline,

And no new day passed over you

Without your showing a new excellence.

If Time has grieved you over Ja'far,

Then ill-treatment is the way of slaves.
