فتى الأشراف سيدهَا النقيبا

فتى الأشراف سيدهَا النقيبا

The mourners announced to exalted honor the death

The elegists lament the honorable chief

Of the nobles’ young champion, their lord and chief.

The youth of nobility, its honorable leader

عليّ القدر أعبق من نمته

عليّ القدر أعبق من نمته

أرومةُ هاشم في المجدِ طيبا

أرومةُ هاشم في المجدِ طيبا

Lofty in rank, the most fragrant of those brought forth

Fate is more fragrant than his growth

By Hashim’s stock, sweet-scented in glory.

The pride of Hashim is virtuous in glory

بهِ لبسَ الزمانُ قشيبَ بردٍ

بهِ لبسَ الزمانُ قشيبَ بردٍ

فجوذبَ ذلك البرد القشيبا

فجوذبَ ذلك البرد القشيبا

Through him, Time donned a fresh mantle;

With it time wore a wintry cloak

Then that fresh mantle was wrested from it.

And that wintry cloak drew it in

مضى محضَ الضريبة في المعالي

مضى محضَ الضريبة في المعالي

وخلَّد من مآثره ضروبا

وخلَّد من مآثره ضروبا

He passed away, pure of character in the heights of honor,

The perfect tribute went to the heights

And made enduring many forms of his glorious deeds.

And immortalized from his achievements examples

وأبقى حيث أغرب في المزايا

وأبقى حيث أغرب في المزايا

على كبد الورى وسماً غريبا

على كبد الورى وسماً غريبا

And, exceptional in his virtues, left

And left wherever he went in virtues

A strange brand upon the liver of humankind.

Upon the heart of the world a strange mark

إذا اعترضَ السلوُّ وكادَ يخبو

إذا اعترضَ السلوُّ وكادَ يخبو

تعيد لنارهِ الذكرى لهيبا

تعيد لنارهِ الذكرى لهيبا

Whenever forgetfulness intervenes and its glow nearly fades,

If adversity interfered and nearly faded

Remembrance restores a blaze to its fire.

Memory returns the blaze to its flames

نعم رحل الحِمام بمن نداه

نعم رحل الحِمام بمن نداه

أقام بكلِّ ناحيةٍ خطيبا

أقام بكلِّ ناحيةٍ خطيبا

Yes, Death bore away the one whose bounty

Yes, the dove departed with the one who called it

Had raised an orator in every quarter.

And in every direction remains a preacher
