The announcement of death struck my ears with its voice,

and bent my rib over the embers of anguish.

It rent my heart the morning it began

to announce the death of one noble in root and branch:

Mahdi, the noblest of the people of glory,

    in soul, character, and disposition.

O calamity, how grievous it was!

It struck, and my endurance failed before its horror.

It kept my eye weeping over it,

and my soul in the searing pangs of bereavement.

So whenever I write a letter of condolence

to you, the first gushes of tears erase it.
