فقدfor indeed شاقَتhas stirred longing الراحُthe wine منَّاamong us النفوساthe souls
Pass the cups among us, O my drinking companion,
Turn my friend the cups around us,
For wine has stirred longing in our souls.
As the souls have been exhausted by the day.

At evening we grew eager to drink the wine,
We were lively at night to drink wine,
So make our heads reel with your cup.
So shake your cup to intoxicate our heads.

And rise: bring her from among the daughters of the vines,
And get up bring it from the vines’ daughters,
Upon the roses of your cheeks, unveiled as a bride.
On your rosy cheek appears a bride.

As though the drinking companions, while drinking her,
As if the cup-bearers drinking it,
Were full moons in darkness, passing suns among themselves.
Were turning at the break of dawn like suns.

They called one another to her fires, prostrating themselves,
Bowing down to its fires in prostration,
And their prayer was: 'May we never lack the Magians!'
And their claim “may the fire-worshippers not perish”.

I shall halt, as long as I live, the caravan of hope
I will confine, as long as I live, the riding camel of hope,
Where bounty sets the captive free,
Where the attainment will release the captive.

Beside him from whom noble virtues have chosen
To the one whom favors have chosen,
A precious necklace for their throat.
Around his neck a precious necklace.

His is the assembly, girt with wisdom,
For him is the sitting-place sought for prohibitions,
By which even he who terrifies the army is awed.
In which whom corrupts on Thursdays is watched over.

And little it would be for him to spread the two Farqad stars as a carpet,
And seldom to lay down the Pleiades,
And take the full moon there as a companion.
And takes the moon in it as a companion.

So, O son of stars that coursed through the heights,
So son of stars that ran in the horizon,
Auspicious for some people, and ill-omened for others,
For some people auspiciously and for others inauspiciously.

Through you, the day of bounty now smiles,
Tomorrow the day of dew will smile at you,
And the day of foes turned grim and frowning.
And the day of enmity has returned frowning and sullen.

May you endure while the envious remain unadorned,
I remained despite the spite of enviers,
As the hand of praise adorns the pages in your honor.
The hand of praise embellishes garlands around you.
