Indeed, by chaste love, I have never passed a night forgetting

A beloved who used to turn sleep away from my eyes.

Then, by God, I would have forgotten even my own life,

Dear as it is, if I had ever come to evening forgetting him.

And the bough of his form, lush with the water of youth,

Against my will, now lies in the grave's dust.

I was bereaved of him, so sweet in character, after

I had grown devoted to him as he grew in youth's tender bloom.

My soul peers through the folds of its longing

Toward a glimpse of his face that would light the dark nights.

And among the living I seek the sight of him,

Distraught with longing, forgetting that I have lost him.

How often, in remembrance, I turn toward him,

As though he had not been pillowed yesterday, laid to rest.

And a woman reproached me, not knowing love's burning grief,

Nor how the love-distraught keeps watch over the radiant stars.

She reproaches; my ear is not hers, that my heart should answer

Her call to solace; nor is her heart mine.

Had she felt from parting what I have felt,

The one who forbade my sorrow would bid me grieve.

Umayma, have I bloodied anything but my own fingertips?

Has anything but my tears soaked the hem of my cloak?

Desist: I have not cooled my burning grief with tears

That I wipe away as they stream from your eyes.

Nor has sorrow's hand turned, for you, the heart

Within my breast on fiercely blazing coals.

You reproached me, while I bear—God knows—a burning anguish

Whose torments I endure could crush the rooted mountains.

    I have been overcome, and time's calamities prevail;

And in what house have they not set mourners to lament?

How could I prevail when parting came in a sudden night-assault,

While the nights, daughter of my people, owe me a debt of blood?

They drove my loved ones' caravans away from me, and left

Cares, together with sickness, haunting my pillow.

And among those far-off neighbors—if you but knew it—

Is a bond of love in which I wandered, rapt, for nights.

If one abode should reunite us after this,

Then, Umaym, we would prolong our shared lament.

Through whom can I heal sorrow's burning ache? Through no one.

Have the people buried anything but my cure?

And those who set out at dawn—on their departure day I sent after them

Eyelids that teach the morning rain-clouds how to weep.

I stood for them on parting's path, in a stance

That shatters my bones whichever way I turn.

I stood, while my soul, longing for a meeting with them,

Held out wishes on the strength of lying hope.

And one whose body the hands of death have carried away—

How hopeless that time should bring him back again.

    فما حيلتي فيكم عدمتُ احتياليا

    My loved ones, death has come between me and you;

What can I do for you? I have lost all resource.

Halt—may parting never raise your riding camels' breasts—

For one pleading with tears, who fears your growing distant.

Halt; tell me of yourselves—shall I see you,

Even as some phantom passing by night before my eyes?

And those bygone nights, spent amid hopes,

So pleasant and sweet—will they return as they were?

Nights of intimate joy in union, which I wore

Soft at the hems, radiant and resplendent.

    Leave me my heart, or take it with its burning grief;

For there it is, now traveling by night behind the caravan.

My loved ones—no, by God, no solace for as long as I live!

Nor have I taken a devoted friend in your place.

And when the death-herald came by night with news of you and startled me,

And parting's herald cried, 'No reunion!'

I held my breast fast with both palms, never thinking

That my heart's splinters would carry my fingertips away.

And I have ribs, among what parting has honed,

Now bent over the embers of separation.

A sleepless fountain, as though its eyelids

Had sworn by the one it loves never to meet.

And a heart—O lightning, whenever sorrow strikes sparks from you,

You kindle within it a firestick, blazing with longing.

And in the corners of that bier I have a heart

That flutters like a bird, scratching the earth, bleeding.

God has decreed that I shall forever keep lamenting

Burning pangs that make the heart and eye-corners bleed.

So, eye, stream with tears of yearning,

And, soul of mine, you have reached the collarbones.
