I wept for one borne to the grave upon a bier.

His bearers journeyed by night upon the earth, while he was upon the Throne.

The herald announced your death to me; I said, “My life-breath—

The fangs of a speckled viper have closed upon it.”

I had hoped to congratulate you on your recovery,

And now I compose, in lament for you, what I compose.

I never thought that Time would deceive me concerning you,

Secretly lying in wait for me with a ruinous assault,

Until my eye beheld your bier, while Glory

Followed in its wake, bereaved and sobbing aloud.

So I found no recourse except that I

Gazed at it as it receded, like one overcome by a swoon.

As though what was on the horizon were your bier in motion,

And my eye al-Suha, and the bearers Banu Na‘sh.

Piety walked behind you, escorting its own soul to burial.

And who has seen a corpse walk without a soul?

It wept for you while grief’s claw scratched its heart,

So its tear-duct is reddened by that scratch.

Though, as the eye sees it, you dwell

In the abode of decay, in that desolate grave,

Yet with God you are alive, granted bliss,

In His presence, upon those cushions and beds.

But for your virtuous son, Piety would have bloodied, in grief,

Both its palms over you, by biting and gnawing.

But it saw—praise be to God—that there remained

For it Hasan; so it chose what the Lord of the Throne chose.

A youth, whose humble heart is enfolded

By a worshipper’s ribs, untainted by deceit.

So the tongue guarding his virtue utters no obscenity,

Nor does his pious ear hear him utter foul speech.

May the rain of pardon ever tend Muhsin’s resting place,

Moistening the earth that enfolded him, shower upon shower.
