ذكرتُI remembered بذاتat Dhat البانal-Ban (the bān trees) حيثُwhere مضىpassed لناfor us
زمانٌa time بهin it ظِلُّthe shade الشبيبةِyouth سائِغُpleasant
I recalled at Dhat al-Ban—where we once spent
I recalled the pasture lands of Albān, where
a time when youth's shade was sweet—
We once spent time, shaded by the vigor of youth,
كواعبَbudding-breasted maidens ترميshoot عنfrom قِسيِّbows حواجبٍeyebrows
بأسهمِwith arrows لحظٍglances لاnot تقيهاprotect against them السوابغfull coats of mail
budding-breasted maidens shooting from the bows of their brows
With beautiful maidens who, free of all restraints,
arrows of glances that full coats of mail cannot ward off.
Would strike with the arrows of a glance none can ward off.
تدبُّcreep علىover الوردِthe rose النديِّdewy بخدّهاon her cheek
عقاربُscorpions منfrom أصداغهنَّtheir temple-locks لوادغstinging
Across the dewy rose on her cheek creep
They would roam about the soft roses with their cheeks,
stinging scorpions from their temple-locks.
Their wrists’ scorpions inflicting a piercing sting.
لوادغُstingers أحشاءٍvitals يبيتُspends the night سليمُهاthe one stung by them
ودرياقُهand his antidote عذبٌsweet منfrom الريقِsaliva سائغpleasant to swallow
They sting the vitals; their victim spends the night
The sting brought pleasure as sweet as wine
with sweet, palatable saliva as his antidote.
To the innermost depth of my friends, young and old.
لهوتُI dallied بهاwith her حيناًfor a while أطيعI obey بهاthrough her الهوىdesire
غراماًin passion وشيطانُand the demon الصبابةardent longing نازغinciting temptation
I dallied with her awhile, obeying desire through her,
Surrendering to desire, obeying my whims,
in passion, while the demon of yearning urged me on.
While reckless youth egged me on.
إلىuntil أنthat رأتsaw عينيmy eye يدَthe hand الشيبgray hair ناصلاًstripping away color
بهاwith it (that hand) منfrom كلاboth فوديّmy two temples ماwhat اللهُGod صابغhas dyed
Until my eye saw the hand of gray hair stripping away
Until my eyes saw the hand of old age pulling
from both my temples what God had dyed.
Every last hair from my temples by the root.
فأصبحتُso I became لاnot قلبيmy heart منof الغيدِgraceful maidens فارغٌempty
بلىyes, indeed قلبُهاher heart منِّيof me غداbecame وهوand it فارغempty
So I found my heart still not free of graceful maidens;
So I was left with an empty heart, devoid
rather, her heart had grown empty of me.
Of love, while hers had long been devoid of me.
وأمسيتُand I spent the evening فيin ليلٍa night منof الغمِّsorrow تحتَهُbeneath it
فؤاديmy heart لهfor it ضِرسٌa molar منof الهمِّworry ماضِغgnawing
And I spent the evening in a night of sorrow, beneath which
I spent a night under clouds of worry and grief
a molar of worry gnawed at my heart,
That gnawed relentlessly upon my soul,
إلىuntil أنthat جلىdispelled عنِّيfrom me الهمومthe worries بأسرهاin their entirety
هلالُa crescent عُلًىeminence فيin مطلعrising-place السعدgood fortune بازغrising
until all my cares were swept away
Until my cares were swept completely away
by a crescent of eminence rising on good fortune's horizon.
By the emerging crescent moon of ʿUlā’s glory

A crescent of eminence, which Eminence displays as a necklace at her throat,
The crescent moon of glorious ʿUlā wears
his Lord the jeweler who fashioned him from the gemstone of glory.
An amulet around his neck made by his Lord of precious glory.
فتًىa young man لمnot تكنwere أهلpeople of المساعيnoble endeavors جميعُهاall of them
لتبلُغَto attain منof علياهُhis lofty rank ماwhat هوhe بالغattaining
A young man whom all who pursue noble deeds
A youth no amount of effort by the able
could never match in the heights he attains.
Could ever have produced his equal.
يقصّرfalls short كعبٌKa'b عنof نداهhis generosity وحاتمٌand Hatim
ويقصرand falls short حتَّىeven جِرولٌJirwal والنوابغand the Nabighas
Ka'b and Hatim fall short of his generosity,
Kaʿb’s verse falls short of his benefit just as Ḥātim’s does,
and even Jirwal and the Nabighas fall short.
As do the poems of Jarwal and the eminent poets.
