I once knew dwellings at Dhat al-Ban, then at al-Jizʿ,

Which the meadow's embroidery clothed in a variegated mantle.

And every rain-laden cloud poured generously upon them,

Leaving lush vegetation there, then bidding farewell.

It came upon them in turn as spring rain and summer rain,

So the place was the companions' summer home and spring abode.

Whenever the thread of its lightning unraveled along its edges,

The pearls of rain scattered from where they had been gathered.

Whenever the fresh breeze greeted their open grounds,

I breathed in a fragrance that perfumed all the air.

    ولكن بريَّاها النسيمُ تضوَّعا

    It was not they that grew fragrant in the fresh breeze;

Rather, the breeze grew fragrant with their scent.

To my dismay, the tribe's dwellings became a barren waste,

The evening the tribe left them, resolved to depart.

I stood there praying for rain, and so I watered them,

Until the water I drank there was tears.

There I grazed on the tender basil of pleasure,

Going at evening and morning, enamored of the fair, statue-like beauties.

And there I kept company with time, while life was pleasant,

Through nights when my circle of companionship gathered there.

As though the night's darkness were a king of the Zanj, wearing

A crown of the horizon, studded with stars,

In radiant Venus he spent the night beholding

A bride whom beauty unveiled, keeping her from veiling herself.
