وجفَّand dried up بماwith what فوقَupon طرسيmy page رُسمْwas inscribed
I have my excuse: the pen's tongue has faltered,
My tongue deserves excuse, though eloquent
And dried up with what was inscribed upon my page.
It's silenced by what's drawn atop my page

I have—and no Arabic tongue besides it—
None but an Arab can appropriately praise
A tongue grown inarticulate on this occasion.
A non-Arab tongue in this regard is dumb

ومَنand who للثريَّاto the Pleiades بهwith it وهوwhile it is فمa mouth
I task it with describing Saʿd al-Suʿūd,
To describe Saad, excellence personified
And who can reach the Pleiades with it, when it is but a mouth?
My mouth falls short though it's succinct and terse
وغايةand the utmost وصفيof my description لهof him أنthat أقولI say
ياO علماًa lofty landmark ويقلُّand falls short العلمthe landmark
The utmost I can say in describing him is:
The best that I can say is, O paragon
O lofty landmark!—yet even 'landmark' falls short.
Of knowledge - though all knowledge is scarce
تركتُI abandoned لناديهfor his gathering عدُّcounting البقاعthe lands
وعديتُand I turned aside عنfrom قولsaying هذاthis الحرمthe sanctuary
For his gathering, I set aside the tally of lands,
I leave his court's dominions uncounted
And turned from saying, 'This is the sanctuary.'
Not daring to describe this sacred realm
كتركيlike my foregoing لهfor him عدَّcounting أفرادهاtheir people
وكيفand how بتعدادby counting خيرthe finest of النسمhuman souls
As, for him, I set aside the tally of their people—
Like leaving his subjects unenumerated
How could one number the finest of souls?
How count the multitudes his grace o'erwhelms?

And I said: I see the earth in a gathering
I see the earth in council congregated
Of one beneath the fold of whose cloak lie the nations.
Beneath the mantle his protection helms

He is the full moon, yet ever perfect,
He is the moon made perfect, the crescent moon
While heaven's moon passes between waning and fullness.
Whose lacks and wants the full moon overwhelms

Among those present at the head of the assembly,
Amid the princely train surrounding him
Grave in judgment, dignified of head.
Calm, lofty, like the mountains, calm and proud

So, O you, when absent, those present speak,
When absent, still the throng says, "He is here"
But when present, speech is helpless and mute.
When present, all are silenced by the crowd

You were tried, at the outset, with pearls of speech,
You began by perfecting poetic speech
And, O sea, generosity is yours by nature.
O ocean, generous by nature endowed

Yes, I rightly owe Time thanks for you,
Yes, I'm obliged to thank the times for you
For your gracious care is the highest of blessings.
Your noble care's the greatest boon allowed

But I have failed, and I have no power
But eloquence fails me, I've no means
To offer what can bear wisdom's guidance.
To match the guidance of your wisdom's shroud
