رأيتُI found الثناpraise فيin جعفرِJa'far الجودِbounty صادقاًtrue
وكمand many a جعفرٍJa'far فيهin him الثناpraise غيرُnot صادقِtrue
I found praise true in Ja'far of bounty,
Yet many a Ja'far is praised falsely.
فتًىa young man لمdid not يزدهincrease him المدحُpraise فخراًin glory لفخرِهbecause of his glory
علىdespite أنَّهthe fact that it فيin غيرهanyone other than him غيرُnot لائقِfitting
A youth so glorious that praise adds nothing to his glory,
Though such praise is unfitting for anyone else.

إذاwhen قيلit is said إنَّindeed الشمسthe sun أنورُthe brightest شارقِrising luminary

When it is said that the sun is the brightest of all that rises?

So, O you who turn coldly from me out of displeasure,
You have tested my tongue, though it is the most eloquent of speakers.
