I donned a fresh robe from Time,

and went away, stripped of it by its two hands.

    فحيثُ رمى كانَ سهماً مصيبا

    And all of me became a mortal target for it;

so wherever it shot, its arrow struck true.

It struck me with a crushing calamity that saps strength,

and said, 'Stand back! Guard yourself against calamities.'

Then have your way with whatever follows the mother of calamities,

branding my heart with an unfamiliar mark.

And a woman said, 'Death has struck

someone other than you'—yet that one was my heart, struck down.

'So restrain the grief that might disgrace you,

and stem the tears pouring from your eyes.'

So I said, while my heart's breaths

from grief kindled a blaze in my breast:

'O woman who blames me, if the waterskins are pierced,

what they hold must inevitably pour out.

Prolong the wailing and the sobbing with me,

or else leave me to endure these sorrows.

Take gracious consolation away from me today,

for grief has filled my heart with pounding.

Does my soul hope, then—would that it

had been struck by death's arrow—to find peace?

And yesterday his cheek was pillowed

by the dust of graves, and he became dust-covered.

And, my two companions, halt with me beside him:

let us rend our hearts in sorrow, not our shirt-fronts.

And hamstring my heart beside his grave

with sorrow's sword, not steeds and aged she-camels.

And let my heart's blood spray upon him

from my eyelids—blood, not mingled tears.

And call to him, though he lies beneath the soil,

even though I know he will not answer.

Was it a branch, whose fruit I had not yet gathered,

that Death's hand plucked, a fresh, tender branch?

And a star for whom my two eyes shone

with their tears the day he revealed his setting?

    I marvelled—and still this age

shows me a marvel every day.

You die, denied the scent of the breeze,

while I live, breathing the east and south winds.

And you settle in a desolate, barren place,

while I settle in a welcoming, fertile abode.

And you yourself dwell in cramped grave-niches,

while I dwell in this spacious expanse.

This is anguish enough for me as long as I live,

renewing a gaping wound in my heart.'
