حبستُI bound علىto اللهوrevelry قلباًa heart طليقاfree
وقمتُand I rose أُحيّيI greet الخيالَthe vision الطرُوقاvisiting by night
I bound a free heart to revelry,
I confined a free heart to frivolity,
and rose to greet the vision visiting by night,
And stood to enliven fertile imagination,

beside a garden that spring had clothed
In a garden dressed by spring
in a delicate mantle of blossoms and flowers.
With delicate silk and flowers of light.

Over it the east wind trailed her skirt,
Upon it the morning breeze drew its tail,
and scattered finely powdered musk from her fragrance.
And scattered abundant sweet musk.
تروقكit delights you إنif مرَّpassed فيهاthrough it النسيمُthe breeze

It delights you when the breeze passes through it,
You would delight if a soft breeze passed through it,
playing with one of its leafy boughs.
Playing with a tender branch.

As though the boughs, when the doves sing
As if the branches, when leaves sang,
in the thicket, were a drunkard who would never sober.
Upon the bent twig, would not awaken.

شقيقاًa brother يعانقُembraces شوقاًlongingly شقيقاa brother
When they embraced in rapture, you would think them
If they embraced ecstasy in their solitude,
one brother embracing another in longing.
A dear one would embrace dear longing.
عشيَّةan evening لهوٍof revelry بهاwith it الدهرُtime جادَwas generous
بهاin it عادَbecame again عيشيmy life غضًّاfresh أنيقاlovely
An evening of revelry that time bestowed,
An evening of play which time granted it,
in which my life grew fresh and lovely again.
Through it my life returned fresh and elegant.
أمنتُI felt safe from بهاin it الدهرَtime حتَّىto the point that كأنِّيas though I
أخذتُI took علىfrom الدهرِtime عهداًa pledge وثيقاbinding
There I felt safe from time, as though
I trusted it until it seemed
I had exacted from time a binding pledge.
I had taken a solemn pledge of time.
سررتُI rejoiced بهاin it غيرexcept أنَّthat الحبيبthe beloved
فقدانُهhis absence ساءَsaddened قلبthe heart المشوقاthe yearning lover
I rejoiced there, yet the beloved's
I rejoiced in it, but the absence of the beloved
absence saddened the yearning lover's heart.
Saddened the longing heart.
فكنتso I would إذاwhenever قلبيmy heart اشتاقهlonged for him
لأرشفَto sip فاهُhis mouth رشفتI sipped الرحيقاpure wine
So whenever my heart longed for him,
So whenever my heart longed for him,
to sip his lips, I sipped pure wine.
I would sip the nectar and overflow.
وأعتنقُand I embrace الغصنَthe bough عنinstead of قدِّهhis figure
وألثمُand I kiss عنinstead of وجنتيهhis two cheeks الشقيقاred anemones
And I embraced a bough instead of his figure,
And I would embrace the branch in his stead
and kissed red anemones instead of his cheeks.
And kiss his cheeks in his place.
فماso not زلتُI ceased أجنيI gather ثمارthe fruits السرورof joy
وأقضيand I pay بهthrough it للغرامto love الحقوقاthe dues
So I kept gathering the fruits of joy,
So I continued to pluck the fruits of joy
and through it paid love its dues,
And spend it on the rights of passion.
إلىuntil أنthat رأيتI saw الصباحَdawn انتضىunsheathed
علىover مفرقthe crown of الليلnight عضباًa sharp sword ذليقاkeen-edged
until I saw dawn unsheathe
Until I saw the morning burst forth
a keen-edged sword over the crown of night.
On the horizon of night swift and strong.
والصبحُand dawn يدعوcalling اللحوقَcatch up! اللحوقاcatch up!
Night went off crying, 'Escape! Escape!'
The night passed calling survivors, survivors!
while dawn cried, 'Catch up! Catch up!'
And the morn calling for union, union!
فقمتُthen I rose ولمand did not أرَI see ممَّاof what رأيتُI had seen
شيئاًa thing أكفكفُI hold back دمعاًtears دفوقاstreaming
Then I rose, and of all I had seen I saw
So I rose and saw of what I had seen
nothing, as I held back streaming tears.
Nothing to dry my pouring tears.

I had thought the eye of time
And I had thought the edge of time
would never awaken to me from sleep's stupor.
Would not awaken me from the slumber of oblivion.
فياso, O لائميmy reproacher إنif ذكرتُI mentioned العقيقَal-Aqiq
ولولاand were it not for الهوىlove ماnot ذكرتI mentioned العقيقاal-Aqiq
So, O you who reproach me if I mention al-Aqiq—
So blame me, if I mentioned carnelian,
were it not for love, I would not mention al-Aqiq.
For had it not been for love I'd not have mentioned carnelian.
تذكَّرتُI remembered منthe one whom كنتI used to ألهوI revel بهwith him
فصرتso I became لكتمto conceal الهوىlove لنwould never أُطيقاbe able
I remembered the one with whom I used to revel,
I remembered whom I sported with,
and could no longer conceal my love.
So I cannot conceal my love anymore.

Though my body has parted from it,
Though my body is apart from him,
my heart has remained there, bound fast.
My heart still clings to him closely.

Would that the milkmaids of spring
Would that the milkmaids of spring
would never pour their rain anywhere but upon it.
Would not spill their life for another.

So with it we water, O nurses of spring,
So let me milk them in spring
the nursling of the groves with gushing water.
To nourish the beloved's thirsty lips.

For every day, among its ruins,
For in his dwelling everyday,
she leaves the tormented lover's heart aflutter.
The heart of the lover leaves broken.

Whenever you sip the dusky hue of her lips,
When the saliva of his mouth drips,
you spurn both morning and evening wine for it.
Dawn and dusk turn tender and compassionate.

You see the moon, the branch, the gazelle,
the sand dunes, carnelian, and pure wine in her:
The definitive, carnelian, and the saliva,

Effacing, erect, good, eye,
and a heavy rump, a mouth, and saliva.
Heavy butt, tender mouth and slick.
