    سئمت طولَ قرعه الحادثاتُ

    God knows that my heart is a hard rock;

Misfortunes have wearied of pounding it so long.

The maws of calamity have chewed it and grown weary,

Yet despite the chewing, the pebble does not soften.

My soul was fashioned of patience, yet

Deep sighs for Husayn have rent it apart.

O slain one, whose death the twanging bows have not proclaimed,

Nor have the cleaving sword-edges wept for him.

Reproach has worn Hashim down since the day

On which the whetted blades drank your soul.

My father be his ransom—his eye raised in proud defiance,

No mote of abasement ever stirred within it.

    Whenever combat flowed with iron,

He taught the rooted mountains how to stand firm.

Drawing for battle a blade of resolve,

And he himself was that unsheathed blade.

If he dies, the blade's watered pattern remains that same pattern,

Gleaming, and the cutting edge remains that same edge.

War fostered them in her lap of old,

And the keen swords bent tenderly over them.

And when I trace their lineage, their young warrior—

His parents are battle and the whetted blades.
