أنا يا ورق للشجا منك أدنى
Do not moan when longing's brother moans.
Do not bend when the brother of longing bends
I, O gray doves, am nearer to sorrow than you.
I, oh leaf, am the lowest to bend for you

ودعي النوح للكئيب المعنَّى
And sing upon the swaying arak tree,
And you sing on the twigs of the camel thorn
and leave lamentation to the sorrowful, tormented one.
Leave the wailing to the melancholy miserable one

راجعاً والمحالُ ما أتمنَّى
Would that my days among Nuʿmān's people might
I wish my days with the living Na’man would return
return—but what I wish for is impossible.
Going back though what I wish is impossible

They camped in the ghaḍā grove; for it,
They descended upon al-Ghadha so my ribs
my ribs grew bowed from longing upon longing,
Bent from the pressing of longing for a girl

for a maiden in that encampment who goes forth
In that neighborhood who rises in the intoxication of youth
while she sways in youth's intoxication.
Twisting from the rapture of early manhood

Fair knights have shielded her secluded chamber,
Her potent beauty entranced the fair knights
and tawny winds, with blows and thrusts.
And the brown winds, striking and stabbing

How far from her is a lovesick man who, whenever he longs
Where is Mutamm, whenever he yearned
for her, flutters with passion and moans?
For her, sighing with passion and moaning

فأمسى مستوحش الفكر مضنى
The hand of the nights flung him into a waterless wilderness,
The nights cast him, confused, so he became
so he became desolate in mind, worn out,
Lonely in thought and twisted in grief

far from his homeland, borne onward
Leaving his lands spreading out
by the camels' forelegs over level ground and rough.
For the riders, easy and grieved

All creatures, humans and jinn, have pitied me,
Humanity and jinn have elegized me
since I saddened all creatures, humans and jinn.
Since I aggrieved humanity and jinn

Time has cast treachery's snare, hunting
Fate cast the tray of betrayal to catch
with it the noble in every dwelling.
The glorious in every twisted valley

It seeks their abasement and the lowering of their glory;
Seeking to humiliate and diminish their glory
but what Time seeks from us is impossible.
Yet fate seeks not from us the impossible
